Talking Crazy idle!!!!!

OK! I too am now having the CRAZY sparatic idle with my 97 Landrover Discovery, my mom is using it in Florida currently while im out here in California. It was jumping up and down between 1800-2200 rpm then settles to 1200-1500 rpms when driving on the interstate 60-65 mph. She currently has no other means of transportation as her vehicle is in the shop for a new tranny, is it gonna hurt it driving it? Or just a little annoying to drive when its like this? I fly in on Tuesday and I am guessing it needs to be reset from everything yall have posted on here? Or could it be something else? This is my 1st Disco so I guess its time to learn, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.....

The high idle could be due to low voltage at the TPS or the fuel pump relay may be going out.

Default Yep, I have a high idle now

Ok, so now I have been creeping around on this board to figure out why my D1 is acting screwy.
About a week ago when I got this disco from my father-n-law, she ran well, but on a cold start at his house, the motor was making a crazy, clanking/rattling sound. With closer inspection, I determined that it was coming from the intake manifold, around where the IACV and TPS are located. There was not high idle associated with this, and after about 5 mins of run time, the sound eventually went away.
I then drove the Disco around the block a couple of times, and all seemed well.
I then drive to my house some 50miles later and found that I had a lost my power steering.
Degreased everything to determine where the leak may be coming from and then when to start the truck and wouldn't fire.
After a couple days later of dry time, the disco finally cranked and now it has a high idle around 1500rpms.
While the truck was running and I was messing with the steering, I decided to hop in and drive it around the yard. The AC was off and I switched it on, then the disco dies. Turn the AC off, and starter the disco back up. Still had a high idle, but didn't think much of it. Just thought it needs some run time and maybe some sensor cleaning.

So now here I am.....
First question: was the rattling/clanking sound from the intake related to the issues with the IACV / TPS ?
2: was my engine degreasing efforts what cause my motor to idle high? If so, would it resolve itself after a few more runs?
3: if indeed its releated to IACV or TPS, what it my first step? Try to get someone to reset the ECM? Replace TPS? Clean IACV?
Thanks everyone

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that when i did get it started back up, there was a faint alarm sound inside the cab. It was similar to the sound when you leave the key in the ignition switch or leave the key turned to the acc on position. While it was running, the alarm never went off. My initial thought was the ignition switch tumbler was messed up seeing how the key i am using is now stuck in the tumbler. I have tried to wiggle , jiggle and pull the key out, but it seems stuck in there. No issues with turning the key to the different positions (acc, run, start), I just cant get the key out.

put truck year in your signature it helps

check the hoses coming from the valve covers they are probl crap, check hose going to the fuel pressure regulator

passenger valve cover hose pull from cover remove plastic piece in valve cover clean and reinstal

remove the iacv clean, do not twist it, while out lean throttle body good , reinstall iacv, make sure everything is plugged in and the clamps on intake boot are tight

if you are obd2 i would buy an ulltragauge it helps and can reset engine light

also b uy a large tube of dielectric grease, unplug every connector you can and smear it in there , also remove the battery ground and clean to bare metal every spot it bolts to, reinstall and paint over( on body and frame)

Odd,
I thought my sig was visible. It was on my first post in the introduction and now it seems to have disappeared. Not even on the other thread I started with my PS issue.

Oh look, there it is

So far, All hoses seem ok

passenger valve cover hose pull from cover remove plastic piece in valve cover clean and reinstal

I have yet to pull out this valve out, could possible still be an issue?

remove the iacv clean, do not twist it, while out lean throttle body good , reinstall iacv, make sure everything is plugged in and the clamps on intake boot are tight

All good now. IACV is nice and clean. No improvement

if you are obd2 i would buy an ulltragauge it helps and can reset engine light

No check engine light...yet. Still working on getting an ultraguage

also b uy a large tube of dielectric grease, unplug every connector you can and smear it in there , also remove the battery ground and clean to bare metal every spot it bolts to, reinstall and paint over( on body and frame)

Working on the plugs as i come across them. still need to check the ground connections.
After all this, still have a high idle.
Whats next?
Reset the ECM?

Unfortunately yes

Using a scanner with live data to see what TPS says would be nice, at idle should be like 11.8 to n12.2 approximately and hold the value steady at idle with you not touching the gas, if it fluxuates need TPS

All the cables on throttle body are slack right as in not holding it up off idle

Ugh.....alright.

I will still double check a few things and see if i cannot get my hands on a scanner to see what the TPS is doing. For now, its back to my PS issue and see if i can find someone local in the Athens, GA area for a ECM reset.

Thanks

well, figured out my high idle issue finally. turns out, after looking over everything again, i found that there was a broken throttle return spring. with just a little pressure, i was able to close back the throttle and idles as it should.

insert homer simpson " doh!" here

so, maybe i dodge a bullet and now to hunt a spring
