Default high idle/skips/hesitates at 1%-5% throttle

i just got a 98 land rover from a buddy a mine its very clean and still looks great but it has a few issues under the hood... it starts fine but idles high around 1500-1900, when you first take off down the road and the motor is cold it skips under medium power, if you floor it, it seems to clean up and run ok but when you lift to maintain 60 it starts to skip a bit, generaly once the motor is warmed up however iit runs just fine (minus the idle) also iv notices that when you step on the gas just a small fraction the motor speed becomes jumpy and will unlimatly stall if you try and just press the pedle a small bit...... iv done the inlet cleaning from the airbox upto the tps, checked for airleeks, changed the plugs and wires, and i just changed out the hole coil pack, all had no effect. it has a couple codes on it from the motor skiping they are for, random multiple misfire, and coil #? failure to fire, or something along those lines.......if you have any ideas PLEASE SHARE!!!

Sounds like your plug wires are routed wrong for the multiple mis fires.

As for the high idle, it could be a bad TPS, a bad idle control valve or a ECU issue.

When you replaced the coil packs, did you replace one wire at a time ensuring you did not cross them up?

Did you replace spark plugs yet? Waht about plug wires?

My 97 had one wire burn thru right at the rubber boot that covers the plug, when I pulled on it, the cap stayed on the plug.

yes i tryed the plugs and wires, before the coil pack.....and if the plug wires were in the wrong position it would run rough all the time, not just when the motor was cool.....

I am leaning towards a bad TPS or IACV.

don't we all just love electrical gremlins !
Given that the rain seems to agravate the issue....I personally would start by unhooking the battery terminals. Clean them and follow the grounds to the chassis or engine and make sure that they are clean and make good contact. then with the battery still unhooked I would remove the decorative plastic cover from the ECU and remove the connectors to check for poor connections and corrosion.

Bingo!! Your ECU is getting wet, you can confirm this by taking it to the automatic carwash on a dry day.
With the engine running if is starts acting up thats for sure your problem.
The coils are on the engine so they wont get wet.
The ECU is on the passenger fender, unhook the battery, remove the ECU, open it, dry it out and then using silicon sealer re-seal it.
Let it all dry and set up good and then put it back.
Problem solved.
