Default Homemade DII headlights?

The more and more I look at them, the more I really like the way the 99-02 DII headlights look with the black ring along the outside of the perimeter of the housing. For those who might not know what I'm referring to,

I like these:

More than these:

Being the utter and complete cheapskate that I am, rather than buy DII headlamps, would it be possible to remove the lens of my existing headlamp and paint that little rim inside the housing? If so, what kind of paint would be good to use? I wouldn't want it flaking off in 6 months, that would just look awful.

Thanks for any tips!

I'm such a cheapass as well, I'll be following your thread. The biggest problem is, I think, to separate the two parts of the headlight.

Once this is done, sanding with very fine grit sandpaper, good primer, and multiple coats of paint should take care of the flaking problem.

They DII lense also has a different beam pattern then the DI lense. Most used rover parts suppliers have them cheap enough to get the DII lense without all the headache of painting and its a direct replacement.

If they are a direct replacement and it only takes 15 seconds a side to remove, I'd be hitting all the scrap yards.

I've tossed around this idea for a year now, but bigger issue's/wants keep me from it. And since I have a factory brush guard, it would take me more like 45sec a side

As far as I'm aware, they're a direct replacement. None of the scrapyards around here could even fathom having a Land Rover in them, and by the time I'm aware of them, they're picked to the frame. If they're really that cheap (<$100) then I might as well spring for them. I'll look around and see.

$100 would almost do both sides, and yes, a direct no-mod-needed upgrade
