Houston Land Rover mechanic
Gents,
I appreciate many of us on this forum are DIYers but from time-to-time I get sick of grease under my nails or just plain run into something I need help on....
If you are looking for a mechanic in Houston, I have tried two.
The first, Land Rovers Unlimited, I am not a fan of. These guys helped me rebuild the top/bottom of my 1996 4.0 motor and it took them 3 months! They reinstalled a cracked bottom rad hose when they put it back together which lead to cooling problems. They masked this by removing my thermostat....all of this unbenounced to me. I also had them rebuild my 5spd clutch and when they machined the pressure plate the thing went out of tolerance and lead to a very soft pedal that didnt like to disengage. For $3500 spent and 3 months time I was not pleased. They are cheaper than the dealer but an example of getting what you pay for IMHO.
Next I found Lucas Autocare. This shop specializes in high end imports (Ferrari, Lambo, Bugatti, etc). Taking my $1500 truck to their shop was a bit of an embarrassment given they have cars in their shop worth the price of my home but I wanted it done right. I was expecting an enormous repair bill for my clutch slave install and to my surprise they had cheaper rates than Land Rovers Unlimited! In addition, they took the liberty of decarbing my intake and fixed a few other small things they found (overlooked or jerry-rigged by the last guys) and didnt charge much for the repairs! The service at Lucas was truly remarkable and they know old discos every bit as much as the Land Rover Specialist shop.
I would highly recommend Lucas Auto Care to anyone in Houston who needs some help with their Rover.
