Sanding and painting sounds good. I find the back to black and etc. doesn't last long. Shoe polish would be good too I guess. I'm always afraid of screwing them up though..

go slowly and you wont screw it up. If you do, sand it back down a bit and start again. so far perfect on my forever black...at 4 months.

Like the other poster said about VW's, a heat gun works well. I also like Forever Black. It lasts MUCH longer than Back to Black. You can get it on Amazon for about $15. It's very effective and lasts.

any ideas other then armor all?
Hi Nelson,

I'm new to this forum but I just wanted to say that I've owned a detail shop for about 3 or 4 years now and the best stuff I've ever found is Bumper Black. I like it because it's permanent. All the other ones only last for a few weeks and some of them even peel back off. IMHO you're wasting your time with anything but Bumper Black. I don't know if it's in any stores but you can get it at bumperblack.com

Good luck,
Randy

another vote for Forever Black. Its hard to find but works great. no need to sand. Apply a few coats allowing it to dry between coats and you'll be good for a very long time. If you get any on your paint or lenses you can take it off with polishing compound.

I saw a paint product specifically designed for rubber and plastic automotive trim that seemed to work wonders... will find the name and post

I used this on my DII this past weekend

Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant, rubber trim sealant, rubber protectant, exterior trim products, metal sealer

Here is a good write up about it: Review: Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant - Auto Geek Online Auto Detailing Forum
