I paid $1600 for my 1996 in Dec. 2011. It has a full custom suspension, drive shaft, diff guards. The chassis had 235k miles on it when the odo was disconnected. The whole drivetrain was replaced some time in the last year with one that reportedly had 73k miles. Engine, trans, diffs and suspension all check out good at the core. Interior upgrades include Corbeu front seats and a DVD player I plan to rip out. That's the good stuff.

The bad stuff: the body is rough, lots of dents/dings/scratches/faded paint. The interior is dingy, the headliner saggy. It has a roof rack that looks good from far, but is far from good. Attached with Yakima rails and lots of washers. The big off road light bar doesn't work (shorted out).

So far I've replaced the front passenger turn signal housing, the idle air control valve (IACV), gave the whole intake system a thorough cleaning, changed the oil, had all four wheel bearing done and the rear stub axle seals replaced. Up next are valve cover gaskets, tires, drivers door window regulator, and a new cat back. It needs new cats, but meh.

Wow, sounds like a generation X or whatever these kids go by had it.

If you are going to rip the DVD player out, I may be interested in doing some horse trading with you so be gentle with it. My factory CZD had probably gotten wet and was replaced with a different one. I just ripped it out and gutted the original head unit as well. There's a couple of units my sons left laying around in the garage that I thought about checking them out and putting one in.

Sounds like the vehicle itself has been thru the wringer but has a fresh motor.

Mine only has 124K on it now, had 104K when I bought it in 2007.

Danny, I'd more than happy to horse trade for the DVD player, but...

The guy I got my Rover from was in fact a gen-X'er who now builds hot rods for a living. I'm pretty sure he horse traded for it to begin with. It's got a screen that folds out and down, so he fabricated a custom bracket to get it in there. It covers up the climate controls. Also a problem I haven't tried to diagnose yet, the screen doesn't fold back in, so I can't insert DVD's or CD's. However, it is cool looking if you like a big touch screen in the center of your dash.

With all that said, if I were recommending a stereo to anyone it would not be the one I'm pulling out. The one I am going to buy is the PIONEER DEH-P7400HD, available on Amazon for $138.27. I've had half a dozen Pioneers over the years and they've always served me well.

here's a link:

All of the others look to be so rare and rare usually equals high price.

Well, I've had them since Series Land Rovers could be bought for a song. It's only since the coilers came back to North America that they've gotten expensive.
