picked up my first car 95 disco for $1,800 good shape, new tires, no lights (except the faulty srs) ticking engine, 182,000 miles after a year and a half, she now has 192,000 with a few more lights on, but all and all she's a trooper!

First disco? 97 SE, 49k original miles, got her for $3900 in 2010. Had some quirks but nothing I couldn't fix myself (or with the help of my mechanic and the forums) before selling. Right before she sold the valve cover gasket had started leaking slowly and a few ABS issues, but looking back I may have really lucked out. Probably also was going to need a new transfer case eventually. Upset I sold her now that I'm on the hunt again -_-.

Good
New alt
New water pump
New battery

New tires all around
Mint body and interior

Bad
Started to tick or knock today can't tell if it's top or bottom end
Sunroofs don't work
Cruise control doesn't work
Load vibration when I'm above 30mph
Upper radiator hose blew yesterday (luckily I have free towing lol)
Can't seem to get the t-case to shift out of high
And the Tachometer doesn't work

99 SD Disco, picked up recently, 131k, 2500.

Had dealer maintenance records for about 115k miles (fingers crossed in that last 15k nothing besides what I know happened), good shape mechanically so far outside of needing a new coolant tank and either my PS pump or steering box likely being shot, although i can still drive and turn, just makes noise and clearly sounds unhealthy. Before selling the owner (the friend of the owner who had all the records) said his water pump went (and im assuming tb?) when he was going down his side street. Pulled over when he heard a noise leaking he said and the car looked like the temp gauge was rising more than normal thankfully. it seems like when it happened though somehow a bit of coolant got into the ps reservoir (kick back maybe from the water pump?), which might require a new pump or box (I budgeted for this being the most expensive fix id probably have to do). He had it changed and inspected by a shop which checked the engine after for him (or I'm assuming they did as they had to diagnose the problem, refill with coolant, etc. and it runs phenomenally) so no HG damage as far as I know, could tell from inspection and driving. To be honest, I'm wondering if the shop got him for a couple of hundred dollars and what really happened was the coolant expansion tank split (the other flaw I caught) while he was driving, but I won't complain about a new TB and pump.

Interiorwise, pretty good, doors needed to be lubed and lock areas greased to get my doors fully working again, small dent in the door im probably going to have buffed out and the bumper cover had a small dent I was able to hair dry out and pop back on. Miss my dual moon roofs, but also don't miss having to worry about them going bad lol.

By the way, since everything is almost done maintenance wise outside of the pump/box ( dont even really know which is the issue yet) and I plan to take a brief trip to make certain everything's good this weekend (around 1.5 to 2 hours), does anyone have any experiences with pump or box failure and how I can tell how close I am, if possible at all? I don't want to be stranded two hours away in the desert beCause I can't steer my way out lol.

Edit: oh, and despite the transfer case and everything being serviced regularly, the CDL still seems to be seized (i haven't really even tried to force it out of the normal position for fear of it getting stuck in an undriveable range).

97 Discovery bought from used car lot in 11' for 7000 which I know now was way to much. Had 115 and change on the tach. Interior was good/excellent

good
new head gasket
no dings or dents
good paint
no knocks or ticks
cdl worked at the time now gonna cost about 350 to get it fixed

bad
tach never worked
roof leaked
cruise does not work
crappy road tires
rear windows issue
front seat controls wont stay in the center console because of worn/broken clips

Still love my baby though.

I traded a 2001 single cab Ford F-150 4x4 shortbed that had 130,000 miles for my 1999 Discovery I with 124,000 miles. The rover was in a wreck. Only damage was the brush guard and slightly bent bumper. I had always wanted a rover! As a bonus the I took the truck from the ex-wife in the divorce. Pissed her off when she found out I traded it. Haha! Love it!

1999 Disco I SD with 74k on the clock for 4500 up in the bronx (back in 2009). Put to starters in it straight away and the exhaust was shot, y-pipe back. eventually ended up doing a valley pan gasket too, but other than that and replacing like a MILLION o2 sensors, it's been good.

Picked up a 94 Disco last week for $1200 bucks. 99K miles. Engine purrs like a kitten .Body is in great shape and interior is pretty good for an 18yo car. I've swapped all fluids, new PS pump, resoldered ECU to fix back windows, replaced drivers side window motor, 2 pints of POR 15 all over the jump seat bed , assorted plastics . Prolly put $ 500 into it so far. Next up is installing the swivel gaiters and dash curl kit. Ive located a brush guard and some nice leather front seats that will pimp it up nicely. My teen boys arent complaining , plus it gives me a reason to get to the garage ( no more...." What are you doing out there ?? " from the wife, i calmly say, in between beer sips, " Dont you want the kids to have a solid , safe car ?? " ) New rubber as well and we are good to go .

Bad : Driveway now has more spots than a Leopard on Wild Kingdom

Bought the 95/5speed I'm currently working on for 600 bucks. It came with new Head-gaskets/heads valley pan already installed plus a new fuel pump installed.

It likes to pop out of second. ( or sometimes will not engage second unless you hold it in place by hand) So It will need a trans overhaul. Oil pump and cover where pretty scored, to the point of low oil pressure. That's temp fixed for now.

I have the truck currently totally stripped out. Seats and headliner should be going to upholstery shop tomorrow. Plan on get it's new dash and other parts this weekend.

Might even order the new tires and shocks etc this weekend....
