Discovery I Talk about the Land Rover Discovery Series I within.

I know this sounds stupid, but how do you change a tire?

You can use the alloy lug nuts on the steel wheel but you cannot use the steel wheel lug nuts on a alloy wheel.
Confused yet?

Alloy lug nuts on a steel wheel are for temporary use only, just like your spare, just long enough to get your flat fixed and you need to check them for looseness often.

Seems we need some clarification here. There are 3 types of lug nuts one can run on a D1.
Lug Nut - Stainless Cap
Lug Nut - Stainless Cap for Defender 110 | Land Rover wheels, tires, hubs, axles

Lug Nut - Steel
Lug Nut - Steel - From 1987 for Defender 110 | Land Rover wheels, tires, hubs, axles

Lug Nut - For steel wheel
Lug Nuts - For Steel Wheels - Metric for Range Rover Classic | Land Rover wheels, tires, hubs, axles

The first two can be run on either Alloy or Steel wheels. The only difference between the two is one has a stainless cap that can warp, the other does not.
The third option is for steel wheels ONLY.

Yeah, I didn't link to it because they had good prices. Only because thongs are easy to find on AB and they offered all three options.

It is not warping as much as it is distortion for the shiny caps. Careful use of a proper fitting lug wrench will work, they just cannot withstand the air wrench turned way up and a poorly fitting socket.

That is why I advocate the 4 way spinner type lug wrench with a 1 and 1/16 opening applied squarely.

The dress lugs are twenty each from LR Dealer. These things are not cheap. Thje solids will not distort like the dress caps do.

The only problem with locking lug nuts...they never come off, even with the tool.
They rust and then you are SOL!!

I don't worry about it. Its not like D1 wheels are some hot commodity. Even if someone wanted to steal my wheels the chances of them having the a large enough socket with them is slim.
