Default I'm BACK!

Just got off the phone and bought a 95 Discovery. Will be picking her up later this week. Has the 5 speed manual.
From seller, it ran hot. He replaced the head gaskets and valley pan. Trucks dropping on the injectors and he doesn't want to deal with it anymore. So I'm going to bring it home and start playing with it.

A/c is suppose to be cold and the suspension tight...

Course it's needs about everything else....

I have a brand new OM617 mercedes engine sitting here with less than 10k miles on it. VERY tempting to go forward with a swap....

Might want to solve overheating issue (radiator, fan clutch, etc.) - so you can eval everything else in running condition. The 617 3 liter had a number of variants, 79/87/123 (turbo) HP, 125/181 foot pounds torque. So a little less power than the 140KW Rover V-8, but a lot longer life and fuel economy. See one in a Rangie and forgetaboutdatick!- om617 swap - YouTube

Oh, I'll give the original engine a fighting chance. But come on, I know it seems to be beating a dead horse but this conversion in my book would still rock. Coupled with the fact I'm sitting here looking at this brand new turbo 617 (84) just begging for a new home...

Hard to say what the story with the truck is without having it sitting here. For what I paid for it, I have to assume it's garbage. (paid a little higher that scrap value) Figure I can't really lose out as I can always recoup the money via a par tout and scrap.

Bought the truck site unseen from only those 4 pictures and an hour of talking with the guy over the phone. So, not expecting much. Just wanted the 5speed to play around with. Hopefully it's not eaten out with rust etc. He did the head gasket job himself, so no saying as to how well it was done without looking at it and talking more with him about it when I go to pull it home.

Course, it's got the 3.9 in it, I'm use to the 4.0 So I'm sure there will be a little learning curve there as well.

A Rover with a 400,000+ mile capable engine would be a pleasure for a long time. And plenty of Mercs in the salvage yards for odd parts. And then when you get that cooking, there is always WVO.....

I've done a lot of studying on wvo... it has to be ran correctly, meaning a 2 tank system, one tank for the wvo heated. another for diesel to start and shutdown the car. (and get all the wvo out of the ip and lines before you shut down.

I bought a 300TD (the one I'm currently rebuilding) and the guy happen to work for a company out in CA that did these 2 tank conversions professionally. One of which was installed in the car. We are talking heated line wrap for the Injector lines, 2 More heaters (using the engine coolant) inline, 3 filters to flush any crap you might have missed pre filtering the wvo, pumps and multiple servos to switch between the tanks. he only thing he was missing was an in tank heater for the wvo and a better secondary tank (they used a plastic 1 gallon jug mounted under and in the front fender for the diesel.

I took the system out and it's sitting in my shop. I may play with it some later.

Here's a pic of it after I finished the repaint... and the pile of wvo stuff I removed...

Oh, anything I should look for when I bring home this 3.9 95 that might be different than the 4.0 setups I've normally had?

Same old same old, clogged radiator, worn out fan clutch, etc. Will have an older ECU, a 14CUX. Down here where it is warm I have a pal who runs his Mercedes WVO "home brew" with no additional heated tank.

supposedly, he put a new fan clutch in right before doing the head gaskets thinking it might be the over heating issue. ALso he said he had gone in and re-soldered the ECU etc... will be very interesting to see what else he did. Sounds like he knew what he was doing to tackle a HG himself....

I'm just looking forward to getting the truck here, it's been a bit now since I had one. I rode around in the white 96 SE that I rebuilt a couple months ago with the new owner (original) and man, I do miss that truck. Maybe this one will turn out to be my keeper.
