Intermittent highway speed hiccup
My 1996 Discovery 1 4.0 V8 GEMS has developed a persistent hiccup while cruising 60 mph. Only begins after 2 hours or so on the road. When it happens I will get several with no regularity and the series will last about an hour. After the car has been off and cooled it is back to running smoothly. Recently replaced fuel pump and filter and new sparkplugs. Fuel pressure is 30psi @ 750 rpm. MAS has been cleaned.
It's a good runner although very rusty. I do a lot of long trips so lots of hwy driving.
No codes and drive shafts feel tight although they clunk shifting into gear.
Any ideas?

I have an Autel that supports most models, works fine on my D1. (MS 509) also shows Land Rover specific codes among others. a good all purpose scanner for around $150 (or less) I got it to troubleshoot my Chev Safari a few hundred years ago and been using it on all my other cars since I got rid of the Chevy

A live data reader is best to troubleshoot the VSS. Or, in the case of the VSS you can simply unplug it and the problem should disappear (but you will lose the speedo).
see here for live OBD data.... https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...02/#post581013
My VSS problem looked like this (the bottom number on the smart phone is the reading for mph).... https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...98/#post568866
the real time data makes it appear that the truck is travelling in excess of 112mph and the ECU starts shutting down cylinders to protect the engine.
A bad VSS is not likely to throw an error code.

when i unplugged the VSS on my '96 the odometer stopped moving. once the replacement came in the mail and i installed it the speedometer and odometer started working again.
