Question International HS 2.8 TGV Diesel Engine

Just wondering if anyone on this forum has dropped the 2.8L turbo diesel in from Brazil into a Discovery 1, or seen one?

(I did try the search function, and got zero results)

You got the correct number. Many want to convert, then figure out it is not worth it on a $2000 vehicle. Lots of strange things to deal with. See https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ht=Proof+Chevy for some of them, 7000+ have viewed, no finished product photos yet. There is a video around on a Mercedes diesel dropped in.

On other sites - International HS 2.8L diesel in a D2 - Land Rover Forums : Land Rover and Range Rover Forum

Land Rover conversions - M&D Engineering

SWMBO usually pulls the plug when real costs are revealed.

Plus in the US vehicles after 1996 this becomes a problem because of state laws on pollution control things, etc.

I have an acquaintance here who is going to drop the 2.8 into his Disco II G4 along with a manual transmission. He knows the cost, and is still going through with it because there is value to it for him.

I was just curious if anyone was aware of it done to a DI and had a review of it after having driven it around.

I know someone who dropped a Mercedes OM617 diesel engine into their D1 with pictures and all. They were able to do it on the cheap as they are a mechanic and have the shop space to do it.

There are a few in defenders. It would be a little different, but not too much. As was mentioned, it's expensive and most D1 aren't worth the money. A really nice NAS D90/D110 on the other hand might be to the right person.

There are some post on 300tdi D1, and the conversion to the 2.8 would be pretty much the same.

defendersource.com might have some photos.... even one of a poor soul that didn't realize that the engine shipped with break-in oil in it and he filled it with another 7 quarts or whatever and the thing ran away on it's own oil.

Yes, there is a person here who I met with a nice NAS Defender 90 who had installed the 2.8, along with additional external air/dust filters that look like horns on the exterior. Said the swap into a D90 was easy, and that the engine was pricey, but worth it!

You won't find that sort of conversion on this site ever...... This is NOT a tech site, it's a site for noobs with overheating, what oil and tire size posts.

The real tech sites are few. Try Pirate, older Dweb posts, Expedition and Isuzu diesel web sites. Isuzu has a whole section on the 2.8. Excellent engine.......

I have not seen an overheating post in at least eight minutes.... but your are correct and there are few that do this sort of thing in comparison to the vast number of owners. Can you mod a Rover in "X" fashion? The answer is always "yes" with enough resources.

This isn't the Isuzu 2.8, it's the Land Rover 300tdi, re-worked for International, at 2.8L and a variable geometry turbo. Later Ford had a 3.0L version that was branded Powerstroke, used in Ranger pickups in South America.
