Default Just got a 200TDI converted XD! Please help me find the source of a screeching noise!

Hey everybody, been lurking for about a month but now I need your guys' help. I recently purchased a '97 Discovery 1 XD edition converted to a 200TDI. Bought it off ebay about a month ago, you guys may have seen it on there. The guy was in Ft. Lauderdale, so I flew down there and drove it back home to NH during my spring break. It was an awesome trip and I bonded with my new girl a ton. I'm in love. She's got some quirks, but the love is real and it is strong. Here's a pic of it in the mountain roads of North Carolina early in the morning. This was my favorite part of the drive. Love me some mountain roads!!

Anyways one of the quirks is quite pressing. Theres a loud screeching noise that seemed to happen only when I turned at first, leading me to believe it was related to the power steering pump. But now today, it was happening the whole time I was driving. I think there is/was a leak in the system, which I didn't know about so it ran dry on the way home and I lost power steering. When I filled it back up, it seemed to be fine for a while. But now it is back to the screeching again, most of the time I still have power steering, sometimes it will go out for a few degrees of rotation but then come right back. The fluid is full and seems not to be leaking. (The power steering fluid I used said it had "leakstop"... I didn't really expect that to work though. Maybe I'm just too pessimistic?) Also the RPM gauge drops to 0 or 100 RPM when the screeching happens and does not work no matter how I rev it. Once the screeching stops the RPM gauge immediately jumps back up and works properly. I did a bunch of searching but couldn't seem to find anything that mimicked my problem exactly. I did read that you are supposed to put Dexron III fluid in it... Which I did not. But I shouldn't think that would make the difference. Any thoughts on what it could be? I can upload a video of the noise if that would help. Thanks in advance for the help.

video would be good, but the tach drop in relation to ps is mystifying, to me. tach sounds voltage-esque or connection.

Here's a video. And thanks! I'm planning to do an OME 2" lift, ARB bumper, winch, and offroad tires soon. I'm thinking BFG AT's, maybe in size 245? It has 235's now and its certainly no rocketship, so I'd like to conserve acceleration and not get anything too much bigger.

The screeching is your belt. The tach is driven off the alternator on a 200tdi so when the belt stops, so does the alternator and the tach. I believe the alternator belt is actually run directly off the ps pump. You need to figure out what is making your ps pump stop turning. It might be as simple as the main belt being loose.
