Default Keep on Blowing Fuses...I'm Stumped

I keep on blowing the 15amp fuse for my blinkers and it's driving me insane. The strange thing about it is that I also lose my brake lights when the fuse goes. Here are the symptoms
  • fuse blows sometimes only minutes into my drive (but could also last 1hr + drives)
  • Lose all signals (front and rear) and brake lights
  • I *think* it happens when I reach to use the signals to turn right
  • I don't see any other patterns or notice that it happens when using a certain combination of things

The brake lights shouldn't have anything to do with the signals, correct? My thought was that the only time that they may be connected is in the trailer harness so I removed the plug in harness at the back of the vehicle. I also remove my stereo completely, as the previous owner installed an aftermarket unit and the wiring was rather iffy looking. I checked the blinker bulbs/connections at all four corners and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Any other suggestions?

Uh, year of vehicle really helps out allot.

They both use the same fuse - 15A F1 in the fascia fuse box (under the steering wheel).

Check your Hazard Switch, what happens when you flip it on (with good fuse installed in F1)?

Ah l, thought all D1's would be the same but it's a '96. Hazards work normally when the fuse is still goos.

94/95 are different than 96 - 99.5 D1's.

Dead short causes fuses to blow. Have you checked your turn signal switch, one of the common areas for shorts/weak connections (due to high resistance).

Thanks, i'll take a look. Is there a way to check it other than swapping it out for a new one?

I'm also beginning to think that my problems may be water related. It's been dry here for a few days which leads me to believe that one of my blinkers is probably filling up with water and shorting when it rains

You can check it visually. The white plastic where the blades are will be heat deformed and brown. The offending blade will be burned, darker than the others. I'll have to go through the wiring diagram to see which wires do what so you can check em with a meter while flipping the turn signal switch.

I just cleaned up the internal contacts on mine and cleaned up the blade and connector and that was good enough for the switch to work properly.
