Default Leaking Roof Issues

I just bought a 1998 Discovery 1. I found today that the roof is leaking around the back sunroof and also near the back door. The back had water coming down on the passenger side corner near the rear door. I am pretty confident that the one is coming from the sunroof. I am not sure about the rear. Maybe the alpine windows? What is the best solution to repair these???

Thanks

alpine windows get rust around the edges and will leak Sun Roofs have drain tubes that should direct water out the sides unless they get plugged.

Oh boy. Welcome to the most common D1 issue on the planet, i think. You will have to seal the sunroofs with a marine grade epoxy sealer or something of that sort. There are many threads on here talking about it. Now, like was mentioned before, if the sunroofs open and close properly check the drain plugs. They are likely clogged and need to be unclogged. The sunroofs are a terrible design and were not meant to last for decades with the truck. Good luck

I will be pulling the headliner soon. I plan on sealing both sunroofs with some kind of silicone. Is there any techniques to sealing the alpine windows?
thanks

Are there visible rust spots, holes, cracks or anything around the alpine windows?

I have been through this like many others here.. my 2 cents is to decide if you want a project car.. i.e. spend time and a bit of money to have a long term relationship with this vehicle .. or plug the holes and drive it into the brush and mud not worrying about the small stuff..

That is a decision needed before you attack the headliner cause what you do and how you do it will matter by your decision...

Also there is the survival rate of the sunroof ecu that you will find between the sun visors, they are known to become intermittent long b4 they die. I have not heard of anyone solving that issue yet but is on my disco list. Would love to tear into one and see if a hairline crack can bring them back to life like the rear window ecu..

Good luck but have fun!

My seals around the alpine windows look to be in great shape.

I would like to just seal the sunroof windows with silicone. I have seen some people remove them and cover with sheet metal.

As far as the alpine windows go could i put silicone into the groove where the window edges sit?

Thanks

If the seals are in good shape, how do you know they leak? Have you eun a hose acros both sides to test?

The leak 'near the rear door' might actually be the rear door weather stripping. They get compressed and fail to do the job.

I am not 100% sure that it is coming from there. I was just told that is a common fail point.

I saw the water pour out near the back door when i moved it other day while it was raining out.
