Lifter Noise

Lifter Noise
I just bought a 99 Discovery with a ticking noise that I believe is one of the lifters, but I'm not 100% positive. I was wondering if this is a common problem or if there is a common problem that causes the ticking sound. I don't know if there is a connection but there is a small oil leak on the lower oil cooler line (it is seeping out where the metal pipe meets the rubber). If it is a lifter problem, where is the best place to get engine parts and how serious is the noise? Thanks.

The manifolds tend to leak on these trucks and it sounds like a valve tap. I would try to tighten the bolts that connect the downpipe to the manifold. As far as your oil leak that is a common problem also no real fix besides replacing the line. I usually get most of my parts threw www.roverparts.com or rovers north. Theres other companies out there also.

Like Long Haul said the exhaust manifolds tend to leak, the bolts come loose or the manifolds crack.
Try Marvell Mystery Oil in the crank case for 500 miles then change it and use a diesel oil and see if it goes away.
Do you have a DI or DII? They made both in '99.

Alright so there were three bolts loose on the manifold and two on the downpipe, tightened them up and the tick got much quiter but did not stop completely. I think it may be the gaskets so I'm gonna try replacing them, much better then replacing the lifters haha. Next project is the front brakes, I bought new ones but on the new ones there is a sensor on one of the pads. The old ones don't have a sensor and I'm thinking this may be why the anti-lock light is on but I don't see where the sensor would connect, any suggestions. Thanks a ton.

The manifolds tend to crack out on the side closest to the engine. Inspect them for cracks. That is what they meant be leaks.
Cut the sensors off, as stated. Take a screwdriver and lightly tap the top of the wheel speed sensor. You will see the wire running to a plastic cap. Tap the top to make sure it is seated correctly. It will test itsself up to 5 mph every time you start the truck. The light may go off. If it has been on a long time, it may be hard set and require a Rover scanner to be read and reset. Remember to clean everything very well before pushing the pistons back, open the bleed screw when pushing back so the junk doesn't go back up, and do a flush or at least a bleed after you are done.
