LNG or CNG?
Has anyone had any luck converting a 4.0 liter disco 1 to run on both gas & CNG OR LPG? The kits look expensive and not too readily available (seems much more common in Europe where they're used to expensive fuel), but with the cost of gas what it is, it might make sense. Also, is it a matter of merely replumbing and adding an additional tank or will the computer need to be rechipped? Also, how badly will this complicate the inspection process?
thanks!
thanks!
Yes you can do it easily, add a extra tank, plumb the CNG lines, wire in a fuel pump cut off switch for the gas fuel pump.
You can then get refilled anywhere they refill CNG tanks for travel trailers and the like.
You will loose almost 20% in MPG running on CNG, you will be limited in the size of the fuel tank.
But you can switch back and forth between the two fuels easily, usually with a switch on the dash.
But you need to ask yourself this, how much is the conversion kit?
How much is CNG? Where can you get refilled? What are their hours? Can you refill only on Saturday? Only Mon-Fri during normal business hours?
How far away from the refill station are you?
Now do the math, how long is it going to take you to recoup your investment in the kit?
Would you be better off just buying a cheap commuter car?
I have looked into buying a $500 beater car, late '90's Corrola, 30+mpg.
But just the cost of the car is 3+ months worth of gasoline in my truck, plus insurance on the car, and then add in any repairs that are needed to make it reliable.
Tires would be another $400 for example.
I wont save any money if I cant get to work because it broke down.
Just food for thought.
