Lubricant leaking around tire 97 DISCO SE
A mechanic did my right CV joint the picture showed what happened a day later. He had it for 3 weeks. So discusted I took to local land rover dealership who said "we work on those all the time" Diagnosis is ----
We have inspected and determined that the swivel ball bearings are leaking on both
sides of the truck.
It appears that the right side is leaking because the preload shimming process was
not done properly.
Also note the right front wheel bearing is very loose, we will check it further upon
disassembly.
The cost of repairs is approximately $700.00 per side for parts and labor.
Shims? What are they?
NOW ten days later he is telling me the 5 "shims" were sent from california and went to Pennsylvania so maybe done Saturday. NOW he tells me they have only worked on 2 of these in 10 years.
P.S. I am moving to "downeast" Maine on Sunday which this guy knows 1400 miles. Anyone know a real mechanic there?

Try DiscoStew on Dweb. He's in the northern IL area. I have a bunch of those shims laying around but I won't be home for a while. All they should need to do is pull the thinnest shim and check the preload. If its still too loose they put it back in and pull the next thinnest shim. They shouldn't really even need any parts to get you back on the road. BUT its a dealer and they probably want to do a whole ton of work "while they're in there".
And I wouldn't doubt how little they have worked on D1's, they're 20 year old vehicles and people just can't afford to bring a $700 truck to the dealer for a $700 repair.

Actually he is charging me 700 each side. The first mechanic charged me 600 to mess it up. I think people don't understand why I keep this going.... how much would I pay to purchase a new truck? 25K? at least with monthly payments of 4 or 6oo.oo This engine is good. It runs great. Everyone that works on it wants to buy it from me for some reason. I see a lot of these in my area and in the area where I am moving. I put a message out to the Rover people where I am moving and I know there is a great basic mechanic I have dealt with. When a dealership orginally tells me he "works on these all the time" and then days later tells me only 2 in 10 years thats just plain bull****ting. This should not be a difficult repair. He is probably fixing 2014 s ahead of me and making me wait. There is no way he could not have parts in 3 days tops.
OK. STOP. You are moving too quickly and not communicating particularly well.
First, put your vehicle in your signature.
Second, refer to the original thread....

Third, I don't believe this has anything at all to do with swivel bearing pre-load whatsoever. Swivel shims are an entirely different issue and I don't believe they are related at all.
This is all about improperly seated seals on hub.
You need to find a competent mechanic. $1400 for seal replacement is robbery.
Start a thread on this forum in the general AND D1 AND D2 sections as well as Discoweb asking for a solid mechanic in your area.

Do you own a jack and lug wrench? Why don't you remove a front wheel, take a pic and post it here, that would be the smart thing to do cuz we don't cost a dime. I can't always interpret non-mechanic speak.
He was supposed to send me pictures of the dismantling. When I get those I will send to forum. Thanks guys. Traveling for 3 or 4 days then will show what I can as you said.
