lugnut frustration

Default lugnut frustration

Factory lug wrench dose not fit. Did some looking and found that the lugnuts are supposed to be 1 1/16 which I'm sure they are, however, they have these pretty shiny covers on them making them to big for a 1 1/16 to fit (which, even though they are loose enough for me to hear them rattle at 5 to 15 mph, will not come off). I've looked for a 28 mm socket with no luck. I've been having to use a 1 1/8 six point socket. It's making those covers not as pretty but at least its not rounded over the hex yet. What are you guys and or gals using?

Three options, in order of best to worst.
1) Get the solid steel ones from a RRC
2) Remove the SS caps. You can use a cut off wheel or do this.
3) Buy new SS capped lug nuts that will get jacked up the first time a shop uses the wrong socket to pull your wheel off.

Be aware that thread is speaking of D2's, and while the caps are the same size the thread is different. So most of the links will not work for D1's.
I can't believe that guy in that thread paid $133 for lug nuts!!!
I paid around $35 for 20 solid steel RRC nuts, but that was a smoking deal.
I do have 10 D1 nuts with the caps already removed I'll sell for $15 shipped.

I was just linking the various posts regarding the size of the wrench/socket for the lug nut. (seems to be all kinds of ideas about what that is) I never really understood the logic behind the caps on the nuts.

The caps are there to look pretty! I change to solids after a nearby shop ruined all twenty of mine when they were doing an annual inspection. They refused to use the correct lug wrench which I had in the vehicle. They get ruined when some ahole forces them off with a impact gun and the wrog size socket.

They were 1 1/16. Go with the solids if you can find a set.

Thanks for all the quick replys. No "shop" will ever touch my lug nuts. Last time I bought tires no local shop could get the michellins I wanted. I bought some online from buy wheels today dot com, free shipping! I removed the wheel weights, valve cores, center caps, and washed the wheels for hours scrubbing ten years of brake dust and road tar from the inside of the wheels. Took wheels and tires to be mounted and balanced. Never seen four wheels require so little weight to balance out. Two of them didn't even need weights on the inside.

I also use a 1 1/8 and put a lot of anti seize on the lugs.

Simple green will remove the brake dust and crud really well, no need to scrub for hours.

Take a 6point 1-1/16" socket, spray the lug nut with WD-40, hammer the socket onto the lug nut, this will form the tin covers over the nut.
Loosen, now good luck removing the socket.
I found it best to loosen the lug nut but leave it on the tire, then wiggle, giggle, hammer, curse, lube the socket until it comes off.
Repeat 19 more times.
Took me 3 hours to do mine the first time around.
