Default Major Service for High Miler

1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1- 301
1 Factory air filter
6 Qts. of engine oil
2 feet of 3/16th vacuum tube
2 feet of 5/16th vacuum tube
6 Qts. Of Vavoline’s high mileage Dextron 3 ATF
7 Qts. of 80/90W synthetic gear oil, 85W/140 for HD use
3 Pints of Vavoline’s DOT 4 Brake fluid
4 Qts of synthetic ATF fluid
1 bottle of Lucas P/S stop leak
1 bottle Lucas Tranny Stop Leak
2 Gallons of Peak or any green or yellow coolant, don’t use Dexcool
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platinum Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor or STI 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat
1 bottle of WaterWetter or Purple Ice
1 new fuel filter
Hoses and belts, as necessary
Front and rear wheel bearings and all seals for wheel bearings and swivels if necessary

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive, change the filter if necessary
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.
Repack or replace the 4 wheel bearings
Service the swivel *****, reseal, refill and adjust the pre-load
Replace the fuel filter
Inspect and replace all hoses, brake, coolant and cooler lines as necessary

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.

Wow im also impressed and see quite a few things id forgotten, but one thing i just discovered on my 96 landrover is the shocks are oem, and never been changed, perhaps that explains why my Goodyear Fortera Silent Armor Tires wore out in 35000 miles instead on 70,000. I will be printing this list out for future reference, and Thanks!

A couple of things new owners should know or do also.

1. The power steering system uses ATF not Power Steering fluid.

2. Clean the MAF properly. Ensure the air inlet hoses are in good shape.

3. On mine, I had some elusice reptitive codes until I replaced the vacumn hoses on the valve covers to the plenum. Mine were the originals with over 100K on a 97. The one on the passengers side is a different diameter on each end, so off the shelf tubing was not good. I got the replacements from AB.

4. Still had issues until I clean the IACV and the port in the plenum where it resides. Also ran much better after a thorough cleaning of the ports where those above vacumn hoses connect to the plenum.

5. The induction cleaning did little good with mine. I did use the aerosol Seafoam as directed.

6. Always use the premium grade of gas. Never the lowest octanes. Change oil frequently.

7. Get a socket (12 point 8mm) and tighten the four bolts securing each of the valve covers to prevent /stop oil leak on top of engine.

8. Make sure you understand how the CDL is supposed to work and see if yours does engage before you need it.

I have no idea.
I have never done this to my truck.
I did not make the list.
Just change all the fluids and filters and be done with it.
Change all the hoses and t-stat.
Repack the wheel bearings.
And do a tune up.
Thats all you need to do.
I have never read the list so I have no idea what is even in it.

I always suggest people you synthetic ATF in their power steering systems to keep the pumps happy.

If you have never read my list, how can you suggest not doing it all and don't worry Spike,
you don't have to take responsibility for its suggestions, some people may just want to do as good a job as they can to maintain their Disco.

Who said dont do it?
What I said was I have never done it and to change all the fluids and filters and hoses and t-stat.

This may be a rather ignorant question, but how does one tell if the transmission filter needs to be changed?

There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers.
How do you tell if a trans filter needs to be changed?
By mileage on the odometer.
If you have no idea when it was last changed change it, then change it every 50,000 miles after that.
