Thank you sir! I'll be putting a new tranny filter on my to-do list. Any recommendations on what's best?

You can get the filter at AutoZone.
I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF, Dexron III is what these things take.

With a 301 filter, the V8's going to take 7 quarts. It's over 6 with the stock filter.

Aren't we talking about the transmission?

What's the ballpark cost of the parts for all this? I can do my own work but wondering what I would plan to spend on parts and stuff.

Thanks.

The cost of what? Disco Mikes list?
$1000 or so.

For the rest of us...dont waste your money on any additive, unless you have a problem and need to "get by" dont waste your money, they dont do any good.
Trans filter kit- $25, Magnecore plug wires- $100, spark plugs- $20, air filter- $20, oil filter- $5, serp belt- $30, coolant hoses- $100, t-stat-$15, fuel filter-$15.
Then use whatever fluids you want, you will need 7qts of motor oil, 7qts of gear oil, 12qts of ATF, 3gal of 50/50 pre-mixed coolant.
Spread it out over several weekends, break it down into sections, one weekend do the diffs, t-case and fuel filter.
Next weekend do the plugs and wires, next the engine oil, power steering fluid (DI uses ATF)
Another do the trans filter.
This helps spread out the cost if you cant afford to buy all the supplies at once.
The only parts you may need to order online are the coolant hoses (dont forget the heater hoses too) and plug wires.

Cool, that's sort of the range I was thinking. I don't have a truck to do any service on yet anyway but since this thread was there I figured I'd know so I can plan for it. Unless I have well documented records I'll assume anything I get needs a major service regardless of what I'm told.

I have an account with Magnecor and they're local to me so that's cool, I like their products. I've not looked close up yet but the steering fluid reservoir looks just like the ones on most of my BMW's. They're pretty cheap to replace and they have an internal filter which gets pretty dirty. It can be back flushed as an interim bandaid but it will only last for so long.

Do these tend to leak under the reservoir at the hose connections? Common BMW thing, the Oetiker clamps cannot be tightened so as the hose ages and gets mushy they start weeping. Usually it's the fill line too, no pressure, vs the return line. Maybe if I'm lucky the oil and fuel filters will be crossover parts too...prolly not though. Might get lucky on the trans filter kit though.

I've got several wholesale accounts to get pretty much any brand of fluid I want so that's all covered.

I guess now I just need to get a truck!

Cheers.

Jack

The power steering system is ZF, just like the trans.
I dont know about the filter, mine is original, 220k.
Yes the res leaks, remove the clamp, cut the hose back to "new", re-clamp, good to go, you only have about 1/4" to play with though.
Fuel filter is standard in-line, its behind the right rear wheel bolted to the frame, its so common Wal-Mart sells it.
I like to use Valvoline Maxlife ATF in the trans and power steering.
I use cheap gear oil, 75w-140.
Diesel oil tends to be best for these pigs.
