Default Muffler burnt from gas running too rich

Hi Everyone, I don't know if you all remember my muffler incident from June but since I got a new muffler back in June it has started to get loud.

I took it back to the place that installed it and they said my muffler is noisy because my truck is running too rich in gas and he could smell the gas when the truck was on the lift so it is eating up the muffler from the inside.

He said I need another coil pack because that is what controls the gas distribution or something. I know I need O2 sensors already.

So my question are:

1) Does anyone know where to get the most economical coil packs?
2) Can a shade tree install them? Are they hard to install?
3) Do you think the muffler was too cheap for the truck or does what he is saying sound feasible?
4) Where do the O2 sensors come into play with this issue?

running rich will eat catalytic converters over time. Not mufflers.

O2 sensors tell the ECU if combustion is complete or not. The ECU will then adjust the air/fuel mixture.

...... or something..... like spark to ignite the fuel. Replace the the front O2's first and spiral out from those. Keep us updated and we'll walk you through the steps of what next. The muffler, kinda mighta been an el cheapo.

OK thanks.. You're right! it was a cheap generic muffler. Any recommendations on what kind of muffler to get with a link to the part?

Thanks. So will the O2 sensors fix the running rich issue or do I still need the coil packs?

yes youll most likely need to buy a coil pack or two. Use an inline spark plug tester (got mine at harbor freight) to check which coil is bad, just trace the spark wire to it. coil can be bought on ebay for a reasonable price. If your spark plugs not sparking due to a bad coil gasoline will be going right into the exhuast.

Like Scout said, start with the O2 sensors. Getting the Air Fuel mixture right is the place to start. If there are misfires you can work those next.

I'm partial to getting my parts from Lucky8 good prices and fast shipping.

I've had good luck with Flowmaster too.
AVOID at ALL COSTS..... BOSAL Mufflers, cats, anything! They don't fit and fall apart from the inside out fast. Good products about 10 plus yrs ago, but not now.
