Went through random climbing temp gauge issues years ago, it was the stat opening up from normal full to 1/8" max in a pot on the stove. A 180* opening stat install after stove checking four new Stant's, some will not begin to open until at 187*F labeled 180*F, again another going cheaper quality control issue? Must add working with the older ram tube 3.9, 4.0 or 4.6 engines transplanted with a dizzy to install a brass plug with a 1/16" hole stuffed into the throttle heating plate hose below. Sure helped stopping hot weather detonation rearing its head as well allowing a colder denser intake air charge to the engine. Mr. engine will thank you.
At 78K miles had the radiator recored (while 4.6 install) by an 88 year old at the time family friend of 72 years in the radiator business. Custom one offs his specialty, the "lead sled era true street rodder". A custom 4 row brass core installed with an added drain to the lower coolant exit pipe a must have allowing any under hood engine work never again fighting removing that nasty lower radiator hose. Rock solid engine temps even with 1/2 the radiator blocked off down the highway 70 mph in 89*F temps w/AC running. That recore cost me $240, free labor as we swap helping each other out in need.
PS, chit can that plastic radiator "burp plug" with an older RR (Pick-n-Pull) or an aftermarket plug I see available. Had the plastic one fail once, whittled out a tree branch screwed it in able to get back out of the mountains. .....~~=o&o>>.....
