And don't put power steering fluid in your power steering It takes ATF.

 

see attached from RAVE on what you did, and how to properly check the new tranny fluid level, RAVE has lots of good stuff in it. Worth the space on your hard drive.

 

This is why most manufacturers remove the transmission drain plug. This has got to be one of the craziest DIY stories I have heard.

 

Being that he is in Athens, Georgia, capital of the Bulldog Nation, the color "red" is rather common.... but we had a Freelander owner that did about the same thing.

 

It was my first time! lol I changed the oil this morning (the right way). 7 quarts! not 5, and the ticking is getting quieter the more I drive it. Thanks again for all the help guys. Live and learn I guess lol.

 

O and the oil light went off but the check engine is still on. Is this common? will it go off by itself or do I have to reset it? How do I reset it?

 

Check engine light will have a code associated with it, you can usually have a parts store read the code and they may reset it also, for free. Write down the code(s) numbers and post them, sometimes the code readers don't know the details. Being in Athens you might want to check out C P Alewine salvage yard on the Atlanta highway.

 

The trans has a very specific method of topping off. It involves running the engine and shifting in and out of drive as it's filled up. I think there's a sticky on it, or it's in the RAVE, and maybe even user manual. Mine took 10 full quarts to fill after letting it drain for 3 days. Yours will vary.

 

It is in the post #23 above if you need a copy. The reason you shift into gear, as in many vehicles, is to bring the torque converter into the hydraulic circuit. Torque converter holds quite a bit of fluid.
