Need some help on purchase price
Im looking at a 5speed D1 with a bad motor, guys kid cooked the engine this week.. chassis has 118k on it and the transmission was new 20k miles ago.. i know the man and the truck.. it also has an sd roof rack.. what is a fair price?
Agree, bad engine the truck is scrap value. The Roof Rack is worth more than the truck itself at this point. The new 5 speed, if fully documented is worth the most. If body etc is in good shape I would pay up to 1000 for it complete just to get the other parts.
Buy the truck, buy a 616 mercedes 4speed flywheel, make an adapter, mate a om617 to the 5 speed, alter the oil pan to clear the front pumpkin, make some engine mounts, and get a gear starter and have fun with it.
Or find another engine. What year is it? I have a running 3.9 that has new heads etc on it but will need new oil pump gears and front cover, maybe that cooked engines are good...
Either way, your looking at a significant amount of work to get her on the road again.

Basically how much can you afford to put out and not even miss it?
Buying it at any price, it will still take many man hours and more money than you would ordinarily anticipate due to all the other things you will encounter. If the motor is truely cooked, you are looking at some significant effort before it will be usable.
You could probably make out ok though by parting it out.
Also a lot depends upon what degree of repair you are able to do yourself.
