new 97 Discovery LSE owner, need radio code, help
I've just purchased my first Land Rover Discovery LSE V8i with 117K on it and the owners manual did not come with it. I went to turn on the radio and I need that 4 digit code. My question is this, can I bypass this error on my own? or do I need to get the info from the dealer? Also, the truck runs great but the rubber gasket around the front windshield has been leaking along the top which has soaked the headliner causing mold to grow. The previous owner caulked it with what appears to be silicon but I want to fix it properly. New rubber gasket seems like my only option unless they make a really great black caulk to reseal it. Another question is how do I get rid of the "service engine" idiot light? I've run the computer diagnostic with no error codes but again is this something the dealership needs to do for me? More than one question on this post but I appreciate any input.
thank you.
thank you.
Call the dealer and ask them to run the VIN on your truck for the code. It that doesn't work you'll have to pull it from the dash and give the dealer the serial number which is on a sticker on the back of the radio. If you have to pull it, there is a special 5 sided hex key that goes into the two holes on the ends of the face plate. You may be able to use a small hex key in an emergency.
Hello Paul,
I should've searched thru older posts as I did fine my answer for the radio. i will call the dealer for that code. Do you know what the best way to seal that upper gasket for the front windshield? I also need to get rid of the mold that is stinkin up the inside from the leaks to the headliner.
Thank you,
Rovingmad

Are you absolutely sure it's the windshield seal that's leaking? My bet would have been on the sunroof (if you even have one). If, in fact, you've determined it's the seal around the windshield, I'd wonder what could possibly cause it. I mean, the glass is practically fused to the frame around it.
I don't know, maybe you should try aquarium seal around the window.

You were right, it appears that the sunroof's are both leaking. The whole headliner needs to come out as black mold has begun to grow. I'm going to post a new question asking for advice on removing the headliner and the backer board that it adheres to. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
found an excellent tutorial on the forum and I got the headliner and foam backer out of the truck with ease. I've ordered a new one and I hope it's as easy to reinstall as it was to remove. I've shampooed the carpets but the smell is still strong. I"m think that I need to use a good cleaner on all the leather to finally rid the smell of mold. No rust under the carpets. I blew compressed air through all the sunroof weep holes and drain tubes but i still can't figure out where the leak is coming from. I sprayed a hose over the roofs for 5 mins. and did not see any leakage. I'll post back after I do some more cleaning. THnaks again.
Hey, Rovingmad. I'm prolly late with this post, but I'm an original owner of a 1997 Discovery SE7, and I have pretty much all my original manuals.
The problem is that the 1997 Discovery radio didn't come with a "standard" dealer 4-digit radio code, like came w/my 2008 Range Rover Bluetooth. You can check the compartment under ur Dscvry driver seat; that's where we original owners were told to store our green manual binder!
In that green binder, there should be a thin silver folder (abt size of 5" X 8" index card) that says, "Land Rover... Security Coded Radio, Instructions and Identification Cards". Each radio has a specific Security Code No. (5 digits) and a Radio Serial No. (PRB and 7 digits).
Now, I was NOT supposed to leave my codes in the vehicle for 16 yrs, but I did, and that's the only reason that mine are not lost!
Luckily, my radio (or Dscvry) was never stolen... or, maybe I'm not so lucky to have a Dsvry since 1997!
Anyway, in that thin silver folder are 2 laminated ID cards, about the size of a driver's license. I'm not sure if the codes are also on the back of the radio itself, but I can check my radio, if you still need help. Let me know. I also do have that original hex key. If you have trouble getting one, I can try to send you a photo, or show it to a dealer near me, and see if they can pull a part number on it. Hope that helps, if you didn't already find answer.
Again, sorry for delay. I'm slow on this Forum and often get confused.

Hi, again, rovingmad. I want to comment that I also had to replace my entire Discovery headliner.
Honestly, my sunroofs never leaked until I had an accident where I rear-ended someone. I used the Land Rover dealer-approved body shop for the body repair
, but it turned out that the body shop owner liked my Dscvry and wanted it for his daughter!
He said my vehicle was totaled, and that's what he what he would tell insurance company, so I could get $$ for another vehicle.
I said, no, I was paying for it out-of-pocket, and Dscvry wasn't totaled b/c my brush bar protected everything under hood; my radiator wasn't even cracked. Only thing totaled was brush bar; but it did it's job!
I think that happened in 2009, but sunroofs were never the same.
Metal either shifted from accident, or body work was not done properly. No surprise there! So, if your vehicle was ever hit, that could be a cause of the leaks. It annoys me b/c mine never leaked before that body damage. Once sunroofs leaked, headliner got full of water and started falling down.
Also, regarding headliner, I had a dealer replace headliner
, but they did a lousy job, and I'm sure I paid too much. I brought it back at least 3 times to improve it. Headliner still falls down in spots. Plus, plastic strip/edging has rough edges, doesn't line-up, and color doesn't match; most kids could've done a better job in Art class!
I'm sure you'll do a great job doing it yourself. I'm not sure if mine (new in 2009) has mold, but I try not to look up! I don't have a bad smell, but I open windows whenever possible.
For sunroof leaks, I just keep paper towels in Dscvry and put most cargo in plastic bags, if rain expected. On sunny days, water seems to evaporate.
Hope that helps...
