Default New Core in a Radiator (99’ D1 SD)

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever attempted to replace the core of their radiator? Any complications? Any retailer you recommend?

Thanks

I've had a few done.
I would highly look local for this, shipping these heavy things right now isn't the best idea IMO.
Only complication I had, was that when I got the new re-cored radiator installed I had to remove the HD fan as it was running too cold during the fall/winter/spring.

Ah, ok thank you. In your experience how much has it run you?

Any odd quirks with the D1 radiator thats thrown mechanics off working on it?

thanks!

Done in 2017 , so prices are probably higher. I believe Brice Thomas Radiator in Gadsden,AL did it for around 150 each.
I may be a little low on that, I cant find the receipt.

Nothing that should throw the rebuilders off.
Mechanics replacing the radiator may have trouble getting all of the air out of the system, mainly the heater core.

Is replacing the core really worth it when a brand new Nissens radiator is around $175 or even less? I would think if your core is bad your fins can’t be in that great of shape.

Yes, 100% The nissens are lesser quality than the OEM. At one point in time they were supplying them with Plastic tanks (which I still see options for on eBay).
The OEM radiator is all metal, The only problem they really have would be corrosion.

DiscoNewbe, if you find a shop in the Denver area that will re-core for a reasonable price, please let me know. I called numerous Denver area radiator shops and the lowest quote I received was $450. I went the Nissens (64029) route in June 2019 and haven't had any issues. I do still have the original radiator and will get it re-cored as a backup if you find a reasonable source. The Nissens is $320 at RockAuto. Not sure where ononomos found one for $175, but that's a great price!

I’ve only begun to begin thinking about what to do. On these 100 degree days the temp gauge starts to climb and after replacing the heater core last year I’m suspecting the radiator is relatively clogged.

I did take a look at Atlantic British and they sell 2 radiators for the Discovery 1 automatic transmission. One for $700 and one for $400. Part of me is debating just buying a whole new. I’ve had to pull the radiator out before and it’s not too big of a deal to do myself.

When you called those Denver area repair shops was that estimate for pulling it out of the Disco and replacing and then putting back in? Or just for recoring it after you’ve brought them the radiator?

I’d probably try to find someone around the Loveland area, farther away from Denver and its over-priced everything haha

I live near Denver too so following with interest. Note, I just bought a d1 with nissens radiator and noticed when hot I'll hear hissing from near the upper hose (top drivers side). Luckily I have an original I kept from long ago so plan to replace with it but suspect I'll need a recore it at some point anyway.

Oh, geeze! Alright, that was the brand I was going to buy, but between you and Logan I’m convinced otherwise.
