Default New Disco 1 a few q's

hi everyone,
i'm new to the land rover world have owned jeeps for the last 7 yrs, just go the first rover and shes a 1997 Disco 1 sd 138k, just have a few q's about it i had a check engine light on but cleared it with scanner and it hasn't come on in 275 miles, could that have been the previous owner not running premium, it was misfiring, i havn't pulled any plugs i'm going to replace them when i do, also the abs light is on is there any way to troubleshoot this???, also she is horrible on fuel what are the causes of this it runs good, and drives really sweet, the only other q's i have is about the trailer wiring anyone have a link that pins it out the connector near the hitch, and the brake controller feed wire color,it is the wrong one for my camper, thanks for any future help and MERRY CHRISTMAS all

First thing is welcome to the world of Rovers! Now you are getting bad fuel economy because you are driving a heavy full time 4 wheel drive truck with a V8 and no matter what you do your going to get bad fuel economy, most of us get around 15 MPG, I get 12-15 and it doesn't seem to change much from city to highway and I think the best I have seen on here is Spike gets close to 20. That is just a small part of the price we pay to drive our machines, they take alot of maintenance and can get pretty expensive. but in the end most of us find it worthwhile. http://www.landroverresource.com/ go here and download the rave manual, this should provide you with everything you need to know about your truck. As for the ABS light there is a method for reading the codes (I'm sure a forum search could find it) however I would start with checking the fuses, often times the ABS system fails in these trucks and are extremely expensive to repair/replace so pulling the fuse will disable the ABS and make the brake system non-ABS for free! many of us have that fuse out and the bulb removed from the dash.

based on our last ABS thread I am worried about how this is gonna go!

I think reading through this maybe a good place to start when dealing with ABS in our trucks!

yea I'm all for the easy fix, but we somtimes jump to "change this and replace this" before we get the whole pic. just wanted to make sure he realized that it is normal for it to stay on til the truck gets over 5MPH.

yah I agree that it is a bit strange to a new owner to see that light stay on after all the other lights go off.

hi everyone thanks for the help i haven't been around the pc with all the snow we got up here, the abs light stays on all the time and the petal ratchets under hard braking even on dry pavemant, i have the rave manual i just havn't had time to dig through it, my rover gets 8mpg at best that is why i asked about mileage, i have changed the air filter, and the spark plugs, with little change, the temp don't reach the halfway mark either does that stop the pcm from entering closed loop mode?, one more q from today how hard is it to fix the ebrake got a rejection sticker for it, so now i have to drive the wrangler in the snow. thanks agian

You're temp gauge should get to the middle(or darn close). If not, you are correct. It will operate in cold mode(open loop), and overfuel. Prob just the t-stat, easy fix.

As to the e-brake. I have never had to mess with mine, but by design, they're simple. What does'nt work? Does it engage at all? Could be anything from a streatched/broken cable to needing new shoes. The e-brake is basically a drum brake on the rear output of the tranfer case.

You can crawl under the truck and get to the ebrake pretty easy, it is the drum right between the front and rear driveshaft
