That's the standard duty one, the heavy duty one is this one

I have a standard duty on my '97, a heavy duty on my '95 Disco.

ok so still concerned about my fan clutch, I left my apartment this morning and could hear it roaring through the parking lot and then for just a few seconds as I pulled on to the street, then as I started to get up to speed it went away, I really don't think I hear it after that (it was about 80's out then). I am going to guess it is bad, also yesterday I had the A/C on and the truck got hot, then I turned it off and the truck eventually got even hotter! I am going to the junkyard today to see if I can find a fan motor out of an old Toyota. After I replace the fan motor I will then replace the fan clutch if it gets hot again.


The fan clutch feels almost like it is working the exact opposite that it should be in that it locks up when it is cold and releases when it gets hot

As you drive the fan clutch will release when the airflow, from driving, cools it down enough.
So it's entirely normal for the clutch to not be engaged with driving.
However, if you stop and it spins freely by hand, then yes, you need a new one.

If the engine overheats when the AC is not running, forget about the AC fan motors and make sure the rest of the cooling system is ok. A Discovery doesn't need the AC fans to stay cool when you're not using the AC. Many Discoveries were sold without AC and they have the same cooling system.

Using the AC fans to keep the engine cool when not running the AC is like using a steering damper to "fix" death wobble.
You can mask the real problem, or you can fix it right.

never seen it overheat without the A/C on and usually only in traffic, replaced the one fan that was not working this morning and it started overheating again this afternoon. yesterday when it was overheating I had the A/C on and it started there then after a while with the A/C off it stayed hot (usually it goes back down) of course it was about 115 out during this time. So if the truck has been getting hot now and then over the last week could that have damaged my thermostat?

Continually overheating the cooling system can damage the t-stat.
But your fan clutch is bad, mine was doing the same thing, coming on at start up, running for a few min (this is normal by the way) but then not working after that.

yes I saw in the rave the fluid in the clutch causes this to happen, after replacing the thermostat I test drove it and it started getting hot in about a mile, the weird part is the truck stays hot even when I am driving down the road, I figured the temp would drop as I am moving but it just keeps getting hot.

The truck just went from bad sometimes to really bad all the time yesterday, well the truck is off the road until I get the cooling system figured out, not good for an only vehicle with a family of 4!

When was the last time you flushed the cooling system?
DI radiators are known for clogging if the coolant is not changed regularly.
LR says every 24 months or 30,000 miles for the DI.
