I'm going to look at a 97 Discovery this weekend. It has been parked for 9 months because the valve cover(s) leaked and it wouldn't run right (sellers explanation). the carpet has also been removed because of a moisture problem. The SUV came from California and looks rust free. Which is awesome for Minnesota. What should I be looking for? This will be my first Discovery and I want to make it a project for my kids and I, but I also do not want to break the bank. I understand the Gas mileage, that's fine, I work from home and don't go far. I also would be interested in converting it to a manual if that is possible.

It looks like it may be an SD. Does it have sunroofs? If no sunroofs that’s a great thing.

It appears to be stock, another good thing. Pop the hood and look around for mice nest, etc. post some pics of the engine area if you are able. Do the regular checks, air filter, hoses, fluids, any connections missing. Does it start and run?

Did they say why the carpet had moisture problems? If sunroofs, probably from there. If no sunroofs, windshield seal likely. Are the seats stained? Headliner there? Any more interior pics?

Check the rubber seals around the rear windows and the two roofline windows for cracks. If this thing has water ingress issues, you need to find from where. Check for RUST. Door seals, hinges, undercarriage.

 

seller mentioned that it has the 'usual D1 problems' but didn't go into the details. (I contacted him too) and he told me someone was looking at it, I assume it is you.. He said it has to be towed, but didn't mention why. I'd check under the drivers floor and the brake lines that are on the inboard side of the frame under the floor, and ask about the windows working, lights, and what else doesn't work. The rear door may be an easy fix, or maybe not. I would either jump it or put a battery in and check for codes (if you can) and ask about if the head gasket has been done. at 188K miles I'd assume it was. Check for fuel leaks near the filler side of the tank, and find out about keys, and check if the alarm has been messed with. Ask about the EKA code and code for radio if it is the stock unit.

Just went through most of this with a "good deal" on a D1 I picked up in Mankato this last January. spent a lot of time and parts to get it to work right.

 

No rust = get it now!

 

It is automatic, so that should make it an SE or SE7? I just looked that up, and don't know what else changes besides the tranny.

 

$500 and no rust. It's one to buy.

 

188K miles... 23 yrs old... water damage inside.. deserves a careful once over...
