Newbie learning curve: Exhaust/O2/bad mpg
greetings folks,
My Disco: 1996 D1 SD/ 2" lift/Safari rack and snorkel. I should say that beyond really loving her, I'm a total noob.
But ready to learn. Furthest I've gotten is cleaning MAF/Throttle body and IAVC and replacing fan belt. yeah.
I waited 4 years to find the least damaged D1, and have since had lots of work done.
New fuel pump, water pump, plugs and wires, oil cooler lines.
I've only now started looking at the exhaust system. It came with a Flowmaster system. Looks like the muffler and tail pipe are rotted, the Y pipe looks ok
and Meineke says the flange on the left side cat is leaking, thus needing to replace that cat. Considering it's been 22 years, should I just consider replacing all of it?
How da hell did I pass NJ emissions last month then?
Will miss the Flowmaster rumble, but need to go sensible and cheap. Recommends?
Now, I just checked and came up with 160 miles on a full tank, like 8mpg. My cheapo OBDII with Dash Command keeps giving a stored P1316 emissions code.
O2 sensor seems locked at 0.010 - but DashCommand reports failure to monitor the O2. STTF reports +24% and 0 LTTF.
Are the O2 sensors the likely culprit? Can I get away with replacing just the two in front for now? I'd be happy with anything in the $60 range...
Will the $140 Meineke diagnostic test give me the answers?
Otherwise, she runs fine, no misfires, nice acceleration. Kinda reached my $$ limit already. Thanks in advance.

Replace the upstream O2's and go from there. https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ERR1834
Y pipe. https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ESR4106
Cat back remaining exhaust system. https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/ESR4106
You should probably also replace the fuel filter canister.
When I gave up the Rover game my 97 was @16 mpg average running premium at or over the $4.00 a gallon mark.
Sensible and cheap are not words normally associated with Land and Rover......
When you get the O2's replaced report back what the STFT and LTFT numbers are.

Copy that. Thanks. The fuel filter is new. Will do the upstream O2s first.
Just a long, and LR expensive process of bringing her up to speed, considering her age, and that she had
been abandoned by the last owner.Would be happy just to get to around 13 mpg. cheers

There are very few Rovers that aren't neglected somehow. There is an adaptive register reset app floating around, you can search the "Discovery" forum for it. It might help achieve that 13mpg once the upstream oxygen sensors are replaced. It'll put the ECU into a learning mode for so many miles. Need a bluetooth OBDII dongle. Yes, they're expensive, the law of supply and demand in action.
I got a 1.5" lift and 32"s no rack - best I can get is 12mpg
Yep, do the upstream O2's first.
I was getting 13.75 mpg. This was with a cat who's insides were all catty-wumpus.
Do the upstream O2's before anything else. That fixed all kinds of weird little issues with mine.
Another source for the O2's: Amazon! Whoop.
For the adaptive values reset, like ihscouts said, you'll need a dongle.
I use this one with an older Samsung GS6. ScanTool 427201 OBDLink LX Bluetooth
This one with a pc laptop.ScanTool 425801 OBDLink SX USB:
The app for Android is available here: GEMS Reset

Thanks guys. LR or not, I'm still in sticker shock - $1000 for new cats to tip, $500 for 4 sensors, w/o labor...yeesh.
Will do the upstream first - I figure, I passed emissions last month, not smelling rotten eggs, hearing no rattling, no misfires...
I wonder though if a $100 Meineke or Firestone diagnostic test is worth it -
will it tell me the state of my cats and muffler, or if there are are injector/valve problems?

yeah I need them thats for sure - but with the body rotting away Im not sure if Ill restore her (for driving not showing) or let her go - If I do a partial restore Ill prolly go with a LS swap at that point and just save the $$ on the gears as Ill have nearly doubled the HP - and likely will break everything in the axles............. cant wait!
