Newbie's First: High Idle and Stalling
- got inspired by spencerfitch's excellent previous thread. big up.-
I feel no shame in saying i know nothing, diagrams make me dizzy, but love my 96 Disco so much, and thank you to this board. It's like a new drug - I've had ten laptop windows open last 5 days...
Is it weird that I know nothing, but feel so connected to her that I can feel when something's up?
96 Disco, got her in CA at 97k, 90k service, now at 116k. New gaskets, water pump, crank sensor...Yesterday, I drove away cold, then stalled 3 times at traffic stops. Just quietly died, like someone took the key away. Started right up, no check engine lights. Problem went away.
Started up today, and went up to 2000, fluctuating up and down wildly, before settling back at 700. Drove around a bit, a-ok. Seems to be ok once warmed up.
So I've decided to get my hands dirty, save money and learn. Sadly, most old threads are missing pics, and youtube's mostly later D2's up - so any D1 tips appreciated.
1 - belt squeaking - will replace tensioner assembly. Belt's slipping over the edge there. Am i correct that I just need to take off the belt there, and not all the way? Should I replace my year-old belt anyway? I can check that they're fitting right over all the pulleys, but have no way to check alignment. Should I go to the pros on this one?
2 - Throttle body - would like to detach it, and wash in CRC. I assume it's just
4 bolt screws? If I leave in place, can I safely move the flap open to get to the other side? There was advice here about tilting the driver's side. Wouldn't that be driving gunk into the manifold?
3 - IACV - its gotta be attached to the throttle righ? detach that too and CRC clean....Can't seem to find the new Delco replacement, and Ebay's ranges from $8 to $560???? Pepboys and Autozone in NJ don't have them..
4 - Since I'm there, I'll Seafoam with spray into the throttle opening. I can't seem to find which port on D1 to vacuum into. Do I cover most valves this way anyways? Should probably do this first, then the t-body, but for my dense urban environment, I should wait til after night rush hour lol.
5 - MAF. The videos I've seen are for other models, and have no clue how the D1's looks like. Tempted to do it anyway, with the right MAF cleaner.
She's been running smooth since I got her, but is it good policy from hereon to buy new parts as I go along, considering her age, and that she will be with me forever? I'm thinking IACV, TPS for starters....where's the TPS anyway?
and is the VSS also located by the transfer case?
Understand this is my first time, I'm in outdoor parking, and it's sheer terror - but the only way I'll learn. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the board. Be patient, get familiar with the workshop manual and perhaps the electrical manual (get over the fear of diagrams, just practice) which can be found in the link in my signature, and use the search function of this board. Also read though the sticky at the top of the D1 section "D1 Tech Section" because 80% of all the problems you will encounter have already been dealt with.
I was a newbie seven years ago and now I'm pretty comfortable with my truck. Take your time, read the manuals and threads on this board, ask questions and you'll be fine.
Here is my thread on the IACV. It is just two little bolts on the side of the intake (aka: plenum). your local NAPA should have it.

I had these same exact problem on my disco 1. In my case it would start fine then immediately go to 2000, then when I shut the engine off then immediately restart it, it would idle too low. Replaced idle air control, throttle position sensor, coils, plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, and even the vehicle speed sensor. It turned out that the ecu had gone out of wack and forgot how to idle properly, the only solution would be to find somebody or a shop with a testbook or other fancy reset tool like a lynx or one of Atlantic British's 400 dollar scanner. However a genius by the name of RobertF designed a program to work with a 40 dollar scan tool to reset the ecu. I made a video about how it works but the credit for the program goes to RobertF. For me the program eventually worked and my truck is back to idling properly.
IACV for a 1989 chevy astro van is what I used.
ran some seafoam into the intake, gently cleaned maf. Car works OK. Oh and it took a while to set the adaptation values. If it sits idling for more than a few minutes it does throw a CEL though.

Not like rebuilding a D1 engine, but today:
Installed a new tensioner assembly and got rid of that infernal squeak.
Cleaned out my throttle body with CRC.
Turns out my shop had already cleaned out my IAVC two months ago.
Idle now steady at 700rpm.
Sprayed a full can of Seafoam into my throttle body at 2000rpm - but no smoke came out. Wonder why??. A full can as well in the gas, and rode hard on the freeway for 20 miles. All good.
