Default No electrical power and strange sounds - 1998 Disco I

Hi Guys,

It seems like something may be draining my battery. Or maybe I have a bad relay or something. When I turn the ignition lately it's hit or miss. Sometimes the dash lights up and I"m able to start as normal, or sometimes there is a long delay from the on position to when it lights up - like there is nothing for about 10 or 30 seconds with the ignition on and then I hear and see things come to life and then I can start the car. There is also the more dreaded scenario where it will not come to life at all. Once when it didn't come to life I called my insurance for a jump and that got it going. The morning after that it would not start right away but after I waited (for 30 seconds or so) with the ignition on it came to life - I was able to see a faint glow of a light or two in the dash and then suddenly it came to life (like something was slowing energizing). I drove it to and from work that day with no issues - battery seemed strong. This morning I'm getting nothing. I was able to open the car with my fob but see no lights or no signs of electrical power in terms of the dash and being able to start the car. When I turn off the ignition I hear a weird relay or actuator type of sound coming from the center console. It sounds like kind of a pulsing type of sound; it has a kind of rhythm to it. Any ideas what this sound is?

When this started happening I checked my battery cables and my main ground. I do have corrosion on my positive terminal but tried to clean it up and re-seat the thing. So, it kind of seems like my issue is beyond the battery connections. This battery is also fairly new - around 5 months old.

Man, any help would be appreciated. It's just one thing after another with my disco now. I just repaired a broken drive shaft and thought I would be in the clear for awhile with this truck.

Thanks,
RC

I had the same issue with the same symptoms. I had a bad connection at the positive battery terminal where the wire connects then goes to the fuse box. It was where the wire goes inside the stud/bolt that goes through the positive terminal. I removed the wire and flowed some more solder into the wire stud/bolt connection. Fixed my issue.

Ok, I'll act on the positive battery terminal and go from there. My positive battery terminal definitely does not look good... Thanks for the response.

my general experience, not with Landrover, is to use the various terminal tools and get a nice clean shiny surface. Then use a good corrosion inhibitors. Either spray on or the treated felt pads. I’ve had good luck this way. The least amount of resistance you have the better off you are. Just my experience

Thumbs up no power

put in NEW Battery! take off ground wire and clean ends where it bolts to the flywall or engine. You would have to have all your fuses out for no power!
