Default no tach

Started the truck this morning and I have no tach and the battery light is on. Checked fuses and nothing looks funny, checked under the hood, all looks normal. Any ideas?

You have a dead alternator. Measure voltage across battery, you will see that it is not anywhere near 14 volts. Switch on the headlights and it will drop more, and not be coming back up, no charging is going on. Truck will run until battery exhausted. If you obtain one from an auto parts store keep receipts and be prepared for 50% or better failure rate. If you have a local alternator starter shop, rebuilding would be best choice. The tachometer is driven by a plug in lead on the back of the alternator that sends a series of pulses that the tach counts. About 270 Hertz (cycles per second, not car rental) at idle, increases with rpm. After local rebuild, used one from good recycler, then used one from salvage (might have warranty issue), on line from Rover parts specialists, but expect to pay $$$. On line generic - same problems as partz-in-da-box stores. Dealership - they can smell ya comin'.

Make sure your connections are good on your alt first, then shell out to rebuild or replace. It has happened before that bad connections were the culprit. Pretty sure it's a dead alt but never hurts to check the simple free stuff first.

May I suggest that you find a local shop to rebuild yours with a warranty. It will probably be cheaper in the long run as auto parts store alts tend to have a high failure rate and you don't wanna keep swapping them out. Just my $0.02

Ditto on the rebuild - you can either DIY (yes, there are videos on the web), or have a local shop do it for you. They replace the parts that wear out, so you have your reliable factory style alternator with new brushes, diodes, regulator, etc. They can give you a quote over the phone.

A link to a GM alternative GM alternator in a Morgan or Land Rover V8

and another Delco Alt in a RR

and one with photos http://www.landroversonly.com/forums...-inside-35861/

So yes, you can install a GM alternator, and they are dirt cheap at the salvage yard. Will need some minor changes, wiring change, etc. Beats parkin' da truck.
