Not sure what just happened: Rover is leaking pretty badly, theres a pool of unknown fluids under her. She was smoking a light grayish color,. I dont believe its the power steering because it wasn't acting different in the slightest. The engine temp was fine, nothing out the ordinary. This leads me to think its oil. please help

Looks like i need a new power steering hose or hoses.

 

I would agree, looks like it blew back on your manifold and made the smoke. May just need to tighten up the ones that attach to the PS bottle (and by the way, it is not power steering fluid, it's ATF on D1).

 

Auto Transmission Fluid?

 

Yep. Would you expect anything different from the British?

 

what will I have to do? I was planing on changing the ATF fluid last Saturday but mother nature said no.. Will I have to just change the ATF, or will I have to change the ATF filter? can I just clean the filter?

Savannah was stating that the fluid in the D1 power steering system is ATF, and Fish was confirming it. Neither was implying there was a problem with your transmission.

 

I believe we are separated by a common language. The power steering system in the D1 uses a fluid, it just happens to be ATF. As such, you can use Lucas ATF treatment to deal with tiny leaks, etc., but your leak looks large, should be able to wipe down and see where it is coming from. And don't let pump go too low or you'll be needing a pump. The power steering system does not share plumbing with the transmission.

The transmission also uses ATF. Perhaps the Rover engineers (and those may be mutually exclusive terms) figured that one fluid does two jobs, and might be more available worldwide. When you are bouncing in the brush in Borneo there is not a Auto Zone around the corner.

 

Check the reservoir first, they tend to go bad and are much easier to replace than hoses.

 

And the hoses from the resivoir are simple low pressure items, cheap and by the foot most places, could even be a loose clamp or swollen end.
