hey Tom thanks for your continuing help

Just swapped out the distributor cap with the old....no good....tried the test with holding the coil lead over the rotor arm and according to the workshop manual you should not see a spark but it did so I have gone back to the supplier of the parts and see what he thinks. Unfortunately the only part I accidentally threw away was the rotor arm.

Rotor can be defective and grounding out to the shaft?

Do you have the old plug wires,I mean it ran before the tuneup

I would try another rotor first

tried a new rotor and didnt work....tried old cap....so now going to try old leads. What has me stumped is the fact that it was running perfectly for a few hundred kms before it died so i am pretty much at the end of my limited line of knowledge
