Default not starting, just clicking

Hey everyone!!! I just bought a 1996 Discovery with 197,000 miles and I love it so far... I'm looking forward to getting it to 100%

I've been driving it for a few days to kind of figure out what needs to be done and what doesn't.

A couple of night ago, I let my sister use the Disco, and she put in regular gas. Driving around all day yesterday it was running and idling noticeably rougher than usual.

Last night, while stopped and idling for about 5 minutes, the engine just died on me. No warning, no lights, it just stalled and died. When I tried to crank it, all I got was a "click", and the starter wouldn't turn. I waited about 15 minutes, and tried again, and the starter struggled to start the engine but it turned over and was running extremely rough. I also noticed a mechanical grinding noise from the engine bay. Then it died again and hasn't started since.

The starter doesn't crank, all I get is the click.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Nothing to so with the fuel put in.
Check all the cable connections from the battery to starter to chassis to battery. Make sure all are clean and tight.
If they are good, battery is dead or starter is bad. Are the lights bright when you turn them on and go dim when you try to start it?

so my first step should be to check the starter... The battery is about a month old, and the lights were all very bright so I don't think it's the battery.

But if the starter failed, would it cause the engine to stall? And when it actually restarted, it was running SUPER rough and I didn't have enough time to check but I think (not 100% sure) that the RPM's wouldn't go past 2k...

Maybe the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

Ugh... You guys are getting me worried.

First battery, then cables, then starter.

LOL... that statement sounds like Chinese to me. Could you explain that further?

Sorry for being such a pain.

To start...did you check voltage at the battery, then at the starter? Did you clean and inspect the battery cables?

I love seeing people replace a starter when the battery cable or battery is crap. Not saying it is in your case, but you should still Keep It Simple S....
