I do have a battery charger... but I haven't actually tested it yet (it's been raining non-stop here in NJ for days now), but the headlights and interior lights were still pretty bright yesterday, and she died on Saturday evening.
I'm going to check all the contacts and wires as soon as I can get a few minutes without it pouring rain, but I feel like a starter replacement is about to happen...

Unused the autozone starter. It took a little to figure out how to put it in but then when the starter died again a year later (I got a new free one from autozone, lifetime warranty) it went in lickety split. The good news is of you get the autozone refurb, If it dies, you get another for free, and you just get better and installing and removing the starter. I can uninstall in like ten minutes now. Practically a pro

With mine, it was intermittent until I redid the ground connection from the starter to the frame. These things are terrible about corrosion in that area. I would redo the battery ground cable as well as the starter ground connections first.
As far as the grinding noise, Tom is saying that the Bendix (which moves forward and engages the flywheel) may be stuck forward and that may be the grinding you heard.
You will find that as you start to work on one item, several more conditions that exist will reveal themselves.
I would advise a good detailed inspection front to back underneath with a good light and a comfortable creeper. Wear eye protection as well. See what conditions exist and clean, inspect, and take on major items that exist.
I usually buy all new mounting hardware whenever I replace anything. Also buy lots of PB Blaster when it is on sale. You will need it.
When dissassembling things, clean it up good, spray it well for a few days, allowing it to soak in, use as long a lever arm as possible and proceed slowly and carefully as you work thru it.
Have fun with your new addiction!
