any tricks for disconnecting upstream O2 sensor from main harness (the connection is in back of coils and down on engine/transmission bell housing)?

small hands and lots of patience. or remove the coil packs. i was able to unplug and replug the O2 sensors with the coil packs still in place, but came away with scraped and bruised hands. if i recall unplugging the sensors was much more of a pain than plugging them back in. my truck is a 96 as well.

No, they are 2 different style 02's and are not interchangable. Also use anti-seize on the 02's threads and die electric inside the connection to keep oil out.

Open the hood. Use a ratchet strap or whatever tired back to the roof rail to open the hood further than just the prop would allow.Jump up in the engine bay and remove the coil pack. This will give you the access you need to disconnect the O2 sensor plugs.

Edit: I missed Jastutte's reply. But yeah, remove the coil pack.

Taking some of the wires out of the coil pack will also give u a little more finagle room.

The other option is to get underneath and snake your arm around the tranny.

Sorry, wrong, the DI uses the same sensors front and rear, the DII does not.

thanks for the correction note, that is good info to know. I'm guess I'm lucky that I'm on my 5th rover and one of these sensors finally crapped out.
