Over heating
Hello all,
New to this site but have a 1997 D1 which I have owned now for 11 years.
She is overheating big time.
Here a couple of things I have noticed.
First, when she does get hot I don't here the AC fans come on. I thought they are meant to come on when the temp gets hot? Also don't they stay on even when you turn the engine off, if it is hot?
I seem to be able to shift to neutral while driving, rev the engine hard, go back to drive and the temp will drop some and then slowly get hot again.
I did replace the thermastat and water pump three years ago, but the radiator is original and I have never done a flush on it.
How do I do a radiator flush?
Thanks

Yes, the electric fans are suppose to turn on when the engine gets over normal op temperature, and yes, they do still run even after sutting it down if the engine is still hot enough.
Wonder if you're fan clutch might be getting weak.
Can't help with the radiator flush, that's one of them things I have someone do for me. Although I think I remember seeing a kit with some garden hose attachments, but I don't know if it will flush the radiator also or just the cooling system.

Do your fans come on at all? If you can't tell turn the ignition to the on position but don't start it. Turn on the a/c and walk to the front. You should be able to tell if the fans are on. If they are not working then you can take a jumper to the battery and see if the motor is bad or if it is wiring or a relay. Let us know what you find out. Also, the overheating issue may be separate from the fans other than the fact that it should be kicking the fan on. But maybe the fans are the only problem. Good luck.
Most of what I've read is the hose attachment type will leak eventually.
I used the prestone radiator cleaner and followed instructions. (minor cheating)
A fair amount of poo came out. (I used the easy stuff b/4)
Ditto, the a/c fans run at hot engine temps even w/ac off.
luck,greg

Turned ignition on and then the AC. I could hear the fans running.
Why would the temp go almost to the red and the fans not come on?
What controls when the fans come on and off when the AC is off?
I did try and turn the clutch fan while the engine was off but still hot, there was a fair amount of resistance to turning them. I think that is correct with a warm/hot engine.

That sounds like your clutch fan is fine then.
There is a temp switch to turn the "E" fans on when the engine gets to hot.

Look through the grill, you will see 2 electric fans mounted to the a/c condensor. Make sure both are running. When mine went, one was still working, so you could hear it, so I thought all was fine. But using a/c in stop and go traffic, or ideling, it would get hot with only one fan running, not both.
