Did you check between condenser & radiator for debris? It can sometimes build up in there for sure.

I did check for debris. all clear.
Also, both fans are coming on with the a/c on.
I did burp the rad.
When I took the brass plug out, the coolant was a bit low.
I filled it with distilled water while I held the top rad hose down as low as I could get it then I put the brass plug back in.
I'll drive it tomorrow and report back.

Man does this sound familiar!! I fought with my D1 (1999) for the better part of a year trying everything because my temp gauge would spike, then go down, then spike again, but not all the time. it would go a month or so with no problems, then start up again. One night in a wicked cold snow and ice storm, it peffed and stayed there. I thought the radiator had froze over or ?? I pulled over and felt the coolant tank.. it was stone cold!! I had replaced 3-4 t-stats and currently have a 180 in there, clutch fan, both e-fans, water pump, and tried water wetter, --don't use it in cold weather it will feeeze- and I finally replaced the radiator as that was the only thing left. The gauge on the dash has a piece of duct tape over it and it has been running fine for 7 months.
Get yourself a good digital infrared thermometer and check the temps to see if the sensors are acting crazy. I replaced mine twice and still no change. I suspect something in the wiring but as long as it runs reasonably cool, I just drive it. Temps here range from balmy -25 below to 110 in the summer. so it does get a workout.

And the 180 T-stat does not help warm the inside of the vehicle at -25 degrees outside. Luckily I have heated seats, but that doesn't warm your toes!!

 

Dcphotos I see you’re running an Ultragauge on your GEMS. I have a UG in my D2 but I was under the impression that they weren’t compatible with GEMS. I’ll order one for my GEMS P38 if that’s the case.

 

I have used a Scangauge II in a D1 forever. Zero issues works great (Ultragauge) also now have one of those OBD2 Bluetooth devices and with my Android phone I can reset the adaptions with the GEMS App.

 

P38 has the air suspension diagnostics on pin 14 of the obd2 plug. the standard is pin 14 is for CAN protocol so it causes most generic one size fits all scan tools to crash. an extension cable thats only populated with pins 4,5,7,15,and 16 will solve the problem
