Unhappy Part it out or keep trying for sale?

Hey fellow rovers.
I'm in a pickle. I love my rover but my expenses have gone too far with repairs and mods that I think it's time to let my baby go since I drive a commuter car now for the mpg.

I've just posted on craigslist for a couple of days but no hits yet. Wondering if I should just sell for parts.

Here is the craigslist post just in case you want in depth
Land Rover Discovery LIFTED 3500 OBO

Any of you guys interested or know someone ? I'll drive it myself to the destination (throwing that on the table)

if questions about repairs or anything in general, just ask. I'll tell you all the bits and pieces.

That Craigslist posting was created yesterday at 8pm, did you have another CL post up before that? 2.5 hours isn't long to get any interest on CL.

I'd say give it time, if you're not in a rush to sell (i.e. need the cash now) just let an ad run for 5 days or so, Delete it and create a new one. Repeat a few times, lowering the price a little each time. Let it go on like this for a month or so.

If you're desperate for cash, post it up for $1999. Or figure out what the rock bottom price you'd want for it is then ad $400-$500 so you have bargaining room.

IMO, even though it's a good runner, the price is a bit steep. Just because there are other worse Discos out there advertised for that price, doesn't mean they are selling for that price.

Oh, and it will help if you WASH it, WAX it, vacuum it out, full detail job. Then take some non crappy pictures.

I may be in for the springs for the right price. Possibly brakes, too.

X2 on steep pricing. You've got to differentiate your truck from others on CL if you want it to sell

i agree with photo. might also try less direct lighting so that you are not highlighting dirt and faults in the aging finish. a picture is worth 1000 words, a good one could be worth a couple grand. good luck

I'd also put a link to it on the 'for sale' section of this site and on the Dweb site. The price, I suppose, will be determined by what you can get for it in parts, vs the whole. Clearly the whole is worth less due to the extra labor/hassle of parting it out.

Other option is to offer it to a guy like Paul Grant (in Connecticut) who is in the business of parting these trucks out.

Thanks for the mention Walt but I'm really not in the market for another early DI. I am expecting a '94 in this weekend. I'm buying it as a favor for a friend locally who need to get rid of the truck.

As far as this one here is concerned, with running DII's selling for less that $2500 on CL in the tri-state area, all I can say is $3500 is a lot of money. I've bought DI's with a lot more new parts on them for $500. That includes the '94 I have been using for the last four years. I bought that one from a guy in Larchmont for $500. It had brand new tires, brakes, a new brush bar, new cat back exhaust, new radiator, new ladder and a rear cargo area filled with boxes of smaller new parts. Oh, and it had 86K on the odometer.

In my experience with buying DI's, I think a range in the low to mid $2K's is more realistic for a truck like this one.

Thanks Paul, your feedback gave me some good insight.
I'll probably going to see if a dealer takes it. I'm in the lookout for a DII
If i'm not lucky, I'll just invest more money and keep this baby forever as my "classic" car and get an LR3 or RR later in a couple of years.

Yeah the ad had been up for a while. This one was just renewed. I'll try a detail job and better angled pics.
