Project: Disco Coco (Like my ex-girlfriend, she's got issues...)
About 3 weeks ago, I FINALLY bought my 1rst Land Rover. I've been lusting after a D2 for about 8 years, now. Within the last year, I had updated my Rover desire to an LR3 (the LR4 is out of my price range right now). I narrowed it down to 3 or 4 in the colors I wanted. I was saving up to buy one outright, then BAM!!! I bought a 1997 D1 in the ugliest color combo I could imagine (Willow Green/Bahama Beige) & needing much more work than I wanted. Mechanically, she's G2G. Cosmetically, she's a butter face...
And, I'm in LOVE!
The stock radio was stuck on weather band. It needs a tune up. The door seals are shot. The front passenger seat doesn't adjust. The rear sunroof has a broken track. The CDL won't shift into L or N, but H does lock. The window seals are cracking out. The speakers are blown. The cruise doesn't work. Neither does the auto-dim mirror, horn, cigar lighter, clock, or fog lights. Headlight washers? Those were smashed off years ago. Also, the hazards now start flashing as I drive down the washboard caliche county road (alarm ECU, apparently). Lastly, the 2 remaining (front) sunroof blind clips broke on me on the 3rd day of ownership.
Most of the electrical stuff I can trace out fairly quick on my own. This forum has been very helpful in diagnosing most of the other issues. (THANK YOU LRF!!
) I just need to get back home & pull her into the shop & knock most of it out.
I bought Coco to be a daily driver & add mods as extra funds became available. My GF helped talk me into buying an older model to build into our overlanding/camping/hunting/foul weather rig. Then, I would buy a newer truck for a DD after finishing the D1. Which, she is starting to regret...
Me: This is about $500. That's $1,000. Those are around $1,100. These run around $1,200. Parts are going to be $250. Etc, etc...
Babe: This damn thing is going to cost more than a new one. Isn't it?
Me:No... But, more than the LR3.
Babe:
Needing just a tune up & service, it runs & drives great. The body isn't going to require too much & has no damage. The A/C blows cold front & back. The seat leather is a bit worn, but the padding is in perfect shape & has no tears. Overall, I'm very pleased with it. I know what direction I'm going with it and most of what brands I'm going to use.
First thing I did was replace the tape deck with a bluetooth Pioneer CD player. Speakers are next. No tunes on an 11.5 hour drive sucks.
My list, so far:
2" lift- Most likely Terrafirma
Voyager Offroad Challange rack
235/85R16 Toyo OPAT2s- It has 245/75R16 Coopers right now & rubs a little
Bumpers front & rear w/ sliders- Probably Tactical Rovers
Hella lights for the bumper & rack
Rooftop tent
Upgraded axles/CVs/diffs/drive shafts- Air lockers & maybe 3.75 gears
Snorkel- I like the ARB
This will definitely not all be done at once. First up, is maintenance. Then, the lift followed by the rack & tent. I'll work my way down the list of what I desire/need the most.

We ended up tripping pipe this morning, so I had a pretty easy day. After I sent my reports off I decided to tackle a few little things on Coco while I had free time in the daylight. I adjusted my windshield washer jets (I think Ray Charles did it before), then I looked at my alarm ECU. It appeared to be solid... NOPE! The mounting tab closest to the firewall is broken off the box. Never fear! I have heavy duty zip ties! Held it in very solid & no more hazards going of by themselves when I hit that 3rd pothole leaving location. While I was was down there, I noticed just a little bit of green liquid along the edge of the passenger side floor mat... Crap! I thought, "It's probably the heater core. I'd better check LRF... I couldn't see where it was coming from, a quick search made me feel better that it might just be the o-rings. Followed by immediate disappointment when I read it's still a pain in the butt to get to...
That was immediately followed by excitement when I found out what the 3 little bags with "extra OEM trim parts" actually were that I forgot about in the glove box... Headlight adjustment sockets! SCORE!!! Last night, my right side headlight was pointing low & left when I ran to town to grab a pizza. Popped the lens back into the socket & mumbled, "Oh, I need to add that to my parts list..." No, I don't. Plus, I have 2 extra. Screws were too small, but the originals are still in great shape. 5 minutes later (I had to dig through my tool bag for the correct size philips), I had another repair finished. Had to go to town for laundry & groceries, and the light stayed in. SWEET! Lastly, I tightened up the connection on alternator tach wire. No more dancing RPMs. Cool!
The heater core is going to have to wait until I get home. I should be stuck out here in Even-God-Doesn't-Want-It country for only a few more days, so it's all good.

So, after waiting a week for parts that were never shipped, I ordered a set of plug wires from O'Reilly's last night & picked them up this morning. Of course, they had the plugs & filters in stock (Wix too). So, I started off with the oil change. Not my proudest moment, but definitely nowhere near the biggest mess I've ever made changing oil. Butter fingers happen to the best of us. The fuel filter brought a future repair to my attention: the fitting will not turn freely on the tank-to-filter line. It doesn't leak, but it took forever to get it off. Did I mention there's still a metric tonne of Texas panhandle caliche still stuck to the bottom of my truck? Well, now it's only a half a tonne... Then I cleaned the "air filter".
I won't go on a tirade about cotton gauze air filters. BUT, WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!! I'm just saving it for the end.
Did a bumper mod I saw on here, but I can't remember who I stole the idea from. If the original poster will claim the idea, I will thank you. (Also, anybody need a mostly good D1 air dam? It'll be cheap.) Removed the air dam & corners, cut corners, Armor-All'd & reinstalled. I like it. Haven't rubbed a tire pulling into my steep driveway yet.
On to plugs & wires. How hard could this be? I mean, they are pretty much in the open & easily accessible. Every single one of the old Autolites (Fram) were gapped to .045-.050" & fouled. New NGKs set to .038" & wires made a tremendous difference. As did cleaning the IACV. It was all going so well, until I tried to snap the wire onto the #8 plug... For over an hour I pushed, cussed, switch hit, etc. until it FINALLY went "click". I have no clue why that is the only cylinder that gave me problems. Got it all done, and Coco runs great. I'm set for a while.
Now, to the air filter...
So, I think my turbo went out... Has anyone ever seen any BS like this before? No wires. No motor. Just a bearing shaft & 2 unattached impellers.
I am getting a factory airbox in the very near future.

Those stupid B$ turbine/tornado air filter add-ons have been around forever. Adds 8 to 10 hp..... NOT.... Just a total waste of money.

HAHA! Right? These impellers are cast metal. I used to machine something similar for a couple years. A buddy of mine bought the tornado (non-moving) for his '87 C10 years back. He said it really did help 1-2 mpg on the highway with that pump sucker. I've never seen one that actually had a bearing.
These things are just funny. Sad part is look under the hood of some 19 yr olds Acura or Honda and you'll find one. My Dip$hit 16 yr old nephew bought one and was convinced it made his Mazda faster. Poor kid is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
I just want a paper filter to keep the dirt out of my engine. Is that too complicated for kids these days?
" Is it supposed to use the intake charge to power the impeller to force more air into the engine?"
In "theory", yes.....but no science just marketing. A tiny "supercharger", not going to get it done. IMHO this thing falls in the will it help...NO, will it make someone FEEL like it makes hp probably. In the end it's just another product to liberate money from your wallet. A quality paper filter works very well in a DI.
Works great, no?
