Default Quick Help Needed, Possible DI Pickup???

The shop next door to my office has a DI in their bay that the owner brought it in due to overheating. They (of course) found the head gaskets are blown and also diagnosed a slipped liner, which in my mind means the engine is toast.

The owner is trying to figure out if he wants to sell it as is, or part it out and I know the guys at the shop, so they asked if I was interested. I walked over to take a look at it, details are below...the owner is supposed to call me later today.

What do you guys think would be a fair offer if he just wants to dump it and wipe his hands of it???

-98 DI LSE
-166K
-SD Rack
-Ladder
-Brush Guard w/ Lights
-Dual Sunroofs

I'd start at $500. I'd probably go as high as $1200 just because of the rack. Do you know how they "diagnosed" the slipped liner? Or are they just giving the guy a worst case scenario?

Yeah, start low, you could always go higher. But be sure to tell us as soon as anything occurs! I <3 parts!

I'm not sure how they came about the slipped liner diagnosis, it's been at their shop since Monday so they might have had time to tear things apart. I was going to wait until after I talked with the owner, hopefully he'll be ready to wipe his hands of it....

I've already told my wife about it and we agreed on $1000 max, so at least the wheels are turning

I don't know how I'll live with myself if I don't find one of those SD-high racks when I get Thor running right and get to buy silly parts

If that SD rack goes to the scrap yard I'm going to get out my threaded lead pipe and bust some knee caps.
