Default HELP! 4.0l Oil pickup location differences

Hi all! Long time reader and non-contributor. Thank you all for your great contributions, you keep my 3 rovers running strong! Finally decided to signup because I have a question that I am unable to find an answer to via searches.

I have an 02 disco II that I'm installing an engine in from a 99. The 99 had a metal oil pan and the 02 has the aluminum pan. Question: The 99's oil pickup bolts to the block, the 02's bolts to the front timing cover, but has the provision on the block for the 99's pickup location. Obviously using a new pump (hence the failure of the 02) on the 99 block, what do I need to do with the open hole where the old pickup went? Or should I just say screw it and use the 99 timing cover, p/u and pan? I'll have to do something with the bellhousing.

Thanks for the help in advance!!

Sounds like the 1999 is a gems engine instead of Bosch. You know the crank sensor mount is different, and the cam pulley is different and won't trigger the Bosch cam sensor correctly.

Both are easy to remedy, but I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't already.

I'm finding so many year to year differences it makes me worry. Thank you for that info though! And I'm glad you said something because even though they appear in the same sport you can see some height differences and noticeable differences in the timing cover design where the sensor mates up.

Bump...

Ok, for anyone curious in the future, I did figure it out. The later oil pickup in the timing cover works on any block. The later timing cover just covers up the pickup hole in the front of the block that the early cover uses. The "galley" for the pickup just makes a 90 from where it connects in the sump to the cover and goes nowhere else.

I would very much like to hear more from you on this subject. You must know by now your article goes to the nitty-gritty of the subject.
