Default A quick question about valve cover gasket replacement.

The RAVE says to use an impact adhesive (RAVE mentions "Bostick 1775 or equivalent") on the valve cover seal face and corresponding face of the gasket. Is Hylomar an acceptable equivalent? Is the stuff really necessary at all?

Thanks.

Before you replace them tighten the bolts that hold them on, they work loose and then they leak.
It is a good idea to snug them up at every oil change.

I'm actually on the tail end of installing a rebuilt engine in my spare time; I pulled and cleaned the covers from the previous block and will be installing them shortly...if I don't need an adhesive/sealant.

Cool

the new gaskets dont need any sealant to work, the sealant is to keep the gasket "glued" to the cover while you position it . A word of caution...as you manipulate the covers into place, make sure the 4 round bushings in the gasket ....STAY in the gasket, not drop into the valvetrain and out of sight down into the motor......another reason to apply a little sealant !

That's exactly what I was wondering about. I will play with it a bit and if I don't feel comfortable without the goop, I'll get some.

Thanks for your quick replies, guys.

Don't install used gaskets, most likely that will also leak and you will then have to repeat the replacement. Once fixed, make sure to tighten the bolts at every oil change.
