For the time being I have learned not to use 2nd gear unless I am already at a complete stop.
Yea, second always failing confuses me as it seems like a useless redundant gear. I couldnt imagine it being used enough to actually fail. Even before I figured out it was a weak link I always went one to three... just because including it in the effort to get to highway speed was a waste of energy. But yea, from a complete stop its sometimes a reasonable option.

unfortunately had a transfer box go out right before the swap so had to get one and get that fitted.
Along with a new clutch, fork, etc those pieces, the "new" transfer box (and put an ashcroft drilled input gear), new prop shaft u joints, flywheel machining, rear main seal done and a few other bits, it was probably around $5k more to have everything done.
If I was just doing trans only, maybe budget $3k for the install? I had a weird situation where a bunch of things needed doing at the same time.
