radio interferance in AM

Default radio interferance in AM

I have a stock radio in my 98 disco. when i turn to the radio to am their is lots of interference. what can cause it?

If you turn off the engine, and leave the radio on, does the noise go away? Usually it is alternator noise, (whine). See attached for the noise filter on the alternator.

it is defiately alternator noise. i didnt notice the noise filter on the diagram. but i could have miss read it.

Z182 - generator suppresor capacitor

I don't see it on the back of my rebuilt altrnator, but it could be under the plastic cover. It goes between ground and the "flying lead" that plugs in (that drive the tach on the dash). Radio Shack sell these sorts of things to improve CB radio reception, etc.

it should already be there are i need to get one. sorry for my lack of knowledge this truck might be to much for me.

Well, you can unplug that "flying lead" that plugs in the alternator, rather than bolts on. That is the drive to the tach, so it will go to zero. But noise may diminish. That will point you in the right direction.
