I pulled the radio out and added a ground right from the back of the radio chassis(connected to the metal stud) and ran it out to the negative on the battery. It actual made the static worse. I removed the added ground from the battery and it was back to normal. Normal meaning static but not real bad

In that case there is something else wrong, I'd start looking at the radio suppression system in general, don't forget about the ignition system... Hope others with more expertise chime in...

I'm going to be replacing the headgaskets, plugs and plug wires in the next weekend or two. Whenever I get time to do it. Nothing wrong with the headgaskets, it's every other gasket. Just massive oil leaks. This static issue is actual better now since removing the radio again, adding and removing a ground. I didn't do anything but remove the radio and slide it back in place and it's better? However I have another issue with the daytime running lights, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

I noticed this morning while parked and the rover running, if I turn the headlight switch off there is a noticeable amount of static, then when I turn the headlights back on the static goes away. The weird thing is when I turn the headlights off and the DRLs come on that's when the static comes in. When the DRLs didn't work, turning the headlights on and off there was no difference in static. So maybe I'll also look into the DRL system, like start with the relay.

Some vehicles have a transistorized circuit for the DRLs that halves the current to the lights and that gets bypassed when you turn on the headlights, that's the way my Nissan X-Trail worked. The circuit board had some poorly soldered joints and after resoldering the DRLs were fixed. Perhaps yours is something like that and it can be fixed, my LR3 looks like it just has a relay that operates the low beam headlights whenever the engine is running and is out of "Park" on the transmission, but I have not looked at a wiring diagram so don't know. Good luck hunting!

With this setup, and no added grounds or anything else changed, I have no noticeable static even when the system is turned up very loud. Definitely impressed for this old car, way better sounding than my f150. The factory amp (before I bypassed it) caused unbearable static and terrible quality.
Do you have experience with Pioneer stereos? Would you recommend them?

Sorry for being off topic. Maybe you or somebody else can help me. I'm searching for a new stereo. I've been reading reviews about Pioneer decks but they are useless hype. All the positives are covered and they rarely mention the drawbacks. The AVH-210EX head unit landed on my short list. From all the blogs that I've read one stood out. The blogger was hyper critical about all brands and put me on the fence. Well this review was OK until I've reached the shortcomings section.

How hard is to install these units anyways? Can I use my iPod classic with it?

Any tips?
