re transfer case leak
Hello Fellas,
Well,I still haven't repaired the leak on our Discovery 1 transfer case.
Under it today to check level and it was about a half court low.
In my original post I was thinking it was leaking at the front output shaft but am not sure.
When I get ready to repair it I will give it a good washing and hopefully be able to pin point the leak.
My question to you is, I did Spikes inspection cover reseal and now that I think about it, that is when it started leaking more.
The oil is dripping from the bolts. Should I have put rtv around the bolts prior to putting them in???
I am not saying it is coming from the bolts, But I currently do not see much if any oil coming out of the front seal.
Used White Shepard, with no luck.
Spike, if you see this post , what do you think.
Thanks,
Jim

Was not my post on the t-case re-seal as I cant take credit for that one.
However when you use RTV you must make a bead all the way around any hole, let the RTV get tacky, bolt the cover in place and snug the bolts.
To tight and you will squish all the RTV out, to loose and it wont seal well.
Then you need to let it cure for no less than 12 hours before putting any liquid back into whatever you sealed.
24 hours is ideal, overnight will suffice most of the time.
Sounds like all you need to do is re-seal the case.

The lower bolts are dripping oil but it doesnt apperar to be leaking around the edge of the inspection plate. Is there a breather hose on this model? If so, where?
When I apply the RTV, should I level it out flat or leave it like a welding bead?
Can I be loosing this much oil from just the bolts? It is leaving a small puddle every time I park it.
Thanks for for the imput and advise guys.

Yes there is a breather for the t-case, it is on top, you cant see it from below.
No, leave the RTV in a welding bead, let it sit for 5-10 min, bolt into place.
Yes, if they are not sealed properly.
Try tightening the bolts alittle more.
You're welcome.

Experience tells me how much to torque them, sorry I cant give you a exact number.
I am sure some one knows and will chime in, it wont be much I can tell you that.
