I agree that the Land Rover has to be sorted first. The PM and repair on these things costs more than the aftermarket upgrades and if your budget doesn't look that way then you're probably defering something and thinking too wishfully or over confident.
Assumming you do have the Rover sorted, I also think that offroading stock with most of your thought given to reliability and recoverability is the best place to start.
I would replace shocks if they're worn but consider springs carefully. The aftermarket tends to sell springs that are far too stiff. OME heavy duty springs for example are nearly double the stock rate. Does adding a 200 pound winch bumper double the corner weights of your Rover? The spring rates are way off.

we have to help each other out, i like to think we are a small knit community. if i were stranded i would hope someone that is able to help is willing to help. im glad you were able to get a part to him so quickly. I got my tranny cable in and xyz rebuilt and the truck is running great. thanks Paul for being a great source for used parts.
